TONS of Plant-tastic Tutorials!

When I shared my Houseplant Tour recently, I realized how many tutorials I’ve done over the years that are plant-related! And since I was so shocked by how interested you all were in my plant babies, I thought it would be fun to round-up all my plant-y posts in one place!

It seems only right that I share this first… if you’re new to houseplants, or haven’t had great luck keeping them alive in the past, please read this post I wrote about turning your thumb green! 😉

DIY Planters for Houseplants and Succulents

Let’s start with unique planter ideas that you can do yourself! Most of these are for houseplants, but there are a few options for outdoors and landscaping too. Here we go!

This Vertical Succulent Planter was such a fun and simple build, using wood, super glue, and pipe clamps!! Confessions: while the succulents in the pic above are totally real, they didn’t last long… and I now have fake ones in there WITH NO SHAME. The end.

Since I loooove taking cuttings of my plants and rooting them in water, I thought it would be fun to show those roots off with this Test Tube Propagation Station! Tap the pic above for this easy woodworking tutorial!

I made these Teardrop-shaped Hanging Planters by recycling old, wooden bowls that I picked up from yard sales and flea markets. I have these hanging in the sunroom at our new house, and they look amazing as ever!

I made these Cross-Based Terrariums after being inspired by some similar ones that had been discontinued from West Elm. They were so easy to make, and ended up looking so elegant and chic! Especially considering they’re just fishbowls. 😉

I’ve never been prouder than when Della made this 3-Tier Marcrame Planter and shared a tutorial al by herself!

I cant even tell you how much FUN these Wooden Rainbow Sconce Planters were to make. And they’re a pretty simple woodworking project as well!

The key to these Paint Dipped Paint Can Planters is using oil-based paint! Otherwise, your paint will seep into the soil and become poisonous to the plant. Aren’t they so super cute?

Similar to the hanging plants above, I made this Living Wall Planter using upcycled wooden bowls. It’s so fun to repurpose old items and give them new life! This is one of my fave projects of all time.

This Birch Log Succulent Centerpiece was made using nothing but some fallen birch branches and a Forstner bit! OH AND SOME SUCCULENTS. I gave this baby to my mama, and you should see these succulents 7 years later. Let’s just say… they’re going strong.

Making Cute Mugs into Planters doesn’t seem all that creative, but in this post, I teach you how to drill drainage holes for your plants to thrive in those coffee mugs! Just make sure you’re not wanting to eventually use it for coffee again someday.

I was intimidated to try these EASY Macrame Hanging Planters at first, but my fear was unfounded. THEY REALLY ARE EASY! And I show you exactly how to do it; including a video tutorial. You’re welcome!

I’ll be honest, this Upcycled Succulent Planter Idea is made out of a chicken feeder from our local farm implement store!! It was such a fun and easy project. And these succulents are thriving still!

Have some fun repurposing some old pots, containers… even shot glasses! This upcycled planter trio is so chic! And you can use any colors of spray paint!

Here’s another one that comes from wayyyyyy back in the archives. These Doily Stenciled Terra Cotta Pots were made using vintage doilies from the thrift store as stencils. So fun!

This Teardrop Sconce Planter was also made with old wooden bowls, and is so easy and fun to make! Doesn’t my Pilea Peperomia look so happy in it?

I would say my biggest regret in this life, is doing a giveaway of these gorgeous hanging scroll saw planters I made. What was I thinking? They’re SO BEAUTIFUL!

I love giving plants as teacher gifts, so having the twins help me make these little Succulent Teacher Gifts was so perfect! You can’t tell in the pic, but where the letters are, you can see the dirt through!!

DIY Planters for Outdoors

I made this Stenciled Cinder block Corner Planter using nothing but cinder blocks, stencils, and spray paint. And it held up BEAUTIFULLY for many years! We left it at the old house when we moved, so I can’t say if it’s still going strong. But I expect it is. 😉

I’m realizing there’s a definite theme of repurposing items to become planters, and I’m ok with that! Nick and I made this Vertical Garden from Repurposed Gutters! The bamboo shade made for a nice wind-break, and this cozy corner of our porch was so full of life!

If you have limited space in your yard, but still want a strawberry patch, consider using our tutorial for this Free-Standing Strawberry Patch! In hindsight, though, I wouldn’t use these same hanging planters, because the water went straight through them instead of soaking into the soil to hydrate the strawberry plants.

I love putting big, bushy Boston Ferns in our DIY Geometric Planter Boxes each spring, and enjoying them all the way until fall!! Tall outdoor planters like this can be really expensive, but if you make your own, YOU’RE GOLDEN!

I found this vintage breadbox thing at an antique store, and thought it totally looked like a mailbox. I’ve seen Repurposed Mailbox Planters before, so I decided to give it my own spin!

This is hardly a ‘planter’, but it’s definitely plant-related. Right? Having a Potting Bench is definitely a luxury for any plant mama. And I was so overcome with happiness when we built this enormous potting bench with garbage can enclosures. We even hauled this bad boy to our new house when we moved, so I continue to repot my plants on it to this day!

Plant-tastic Decor Ideas

I love plants so much that I love to do projects that are plant-themed and useful around the house for us humans (not just my plant babies!).

One of the things I love about plants is how incredibly unique they are. There are so many different gorgeous shapes of leaves, I thought it would be fun to make these Leaf-Shaped Trivets to put our hot pans on!

I love that these DIY Cactus Coasters are not only functional, but they also look like a piece of art sculpture when not in use!! And they were sooooooo fun to make!
