Modern Circle Shelf Tutorial

February 25, 2019 by Bethany Sy

This circle shelf project has been in the works for weeks, and I’m so excited to be able to share it with you FINALLY! Whenever we do a video along with our blog post tutorial, it seems to take longer to edit the video than to execute the entire project. *eye roll emoji*

But we’re getting faster… I think? And it turned out pretty amazing (can I say that?)

As you know, we’ve been slowly chugging away at making over our girls’ new room. It started out looking like this, and we pealed off all the layers of wallpaper and painted above the chair rail ‘Meander Blue’ by Sherwin Williams (the PERFECT pale aqua). We also assembled the triple bunk and added some DIY Upholstered Headboards for a vintage/personal touch.

We also added this DIY 3-Tier Shelf and hacked 3 IKEA RAST dressers into one long Mid-Century inspired dresser THAT IS EVERYTHING.

Before you ask about the Rainbow Art, YES it’s also DIYed, and YES there’s a tutorial!

We loved the design ideas that Modsy came up with, and especially loved these circle shelves from West Elm! (the image below is a computer rendering of the girls’ room by Modsy)

I loved those shelves enough that I was ready to pull the trigger on those $300 (EACH!) price tags. But Nick reigned me in, and assured me we could make them. And it was nice to take a quick break from ALL THINGS KITCHEN to knock out a fun woodworking project together!

We’re formatting this post a little differently. Rather than share a detailed tutorial on the blog, and have an ‘overview’ in the video, we’re sharing all the details in the video and just sharing an overview of the project here.

We started out by ripping down 1×4 pine boards down into strips, and then cut them into trapezoids. The goal is to make this as close to a circle as possible so we waste less wood and time.

We glued together the trapezoids to make a polygon, and cinched them tight with a ratchet strap to dry. We need 4 of these polygons per shelf!

We nailed some blocks into place on our workbench, and fit the polygon down perfectly so that it’s snug and won’t move while we’re routing the circle. Using a plunge router and a our circle jig, we routed around the outside edges first, and then the inside edge. Leaving us with a perfect circle!

Then we glued 4 of these circles together and clamped them down to dry!

Next up, there’s a lot of angle-measuring and weird cuts to get these shelves in place. More specific details in the video!

Finally, it’s time to stain these babies! After sanding all the way down to a 220 grit, we used Mohawks new Ultra Penetrating Stain in ‘Perfect Brown’. This stuff goes on so smooth, and is fade resistant! You can brush, spray, or roll it on, but for this project we just brushed it.

I’m absolutely obsessed with how these Circle Shelves turned out! I think they give the perfect amount of sophisticated to the girls’ room.

Did you spy the kitty photobomb in that pic above? Teehee!

Also, the capiz light fixture is by Corbett Lighting and is called the Dolce chandelier. It’s so light and airy… and perfect for this little girls space!

The girls’ room is DONE! And I’m going to pull together a room reveal with specific sources, paint colors, and eye-candy pics!

Stay tuned for that!

What is the radius of the circle shelf? How many pieces did it take to do 1 circle?

I love the shelf design! Using trapezoids to get close to the circle shape is really clever. This makes me wish a had a router…

I love it. Especially with the white and light colored walls. Really adds to the room.
I am SUPER curious. Where are the kids toys? 3 girls in one room? You have to have a toy box/storage secret.

There is a small shelf with some toys that’s not pictured, and a large basket for stuffed animals. But we try to keep toys to a minimum in their bedroom so the little one isn’t tempted to play instead of sleep. 😉
