I know that my decorating style isn’t exactly ‘traditional’. It’s sort of an obnoxious mix of Mid-Century Modern, boho, eclectic mish-mash. It’s mine, and I love it.
And in the weeks and months since we bought our ‘new’ historic home, there are a TON of people that are concerned about how I’m going to switch my style to match the style of this home.
BETHANY, HOW WILL YOU HONOR AND EMBRACE THE INTRICATE MOLDING AND ELEGANT CURVY STAIRCASE?!
Since there are people out there that are losing sleep over this, I’m here to set the record straight.
I feel strongly that your home should represent YOU and YOUR design style! And since this is no longer the 80’s, we can mix styles to our heart’s content and still rock it!
It’s fascinating to me that people see ornate trim and chunky crown molding, and instantly think it needs to be furnished with romantic Victorian-era crushed-velvet fainting couches, and thick damask-patterned upholstery fabric curtains straight out of Downton Abbey.
So I’m going to drop a ton of images below that are gorgeous and inspirational examples of how this style of home can be incorporated with any style! Let there be color! Let there be pattern! LET THERE BE PERSONALITY!

Soooooo gorgeous, right? If you HAD to pick a fave from the pictures above, which one would you choose?
I love every one of these for different reasons. But if you held me at gunpoint and made me pick one, I would choose this one.
Who would think to put mauve and navy together?! I want to be friends with that person!

I am literally panting over your house. Hot guys, MOVE ASIDE! You are nothing compared to an old home. Sincerely, a Victoriophile.
All your inspiration pics are great- I’d choose 14.

Hehe… you’re so sweet! It IS pretty amazing, eh?!
You are so lucky, because this house has beautiful bones and fabulous design/structures. You have made it an outstanding warm and welcoming home.
I honestly can’t wait to see what you do with the house! You’re style infused with the architecture of the house will be amazing! My family is transferring to a new duty station and I’ll be living in military housing for a few more years, so this is a sort of like remodeling and decor therapy for me LOL

first thought—- paint it alllllll white white white – clean & crisp – then it will come to you for the pop /pops of color 😉 I’m a semi gloss girl – so I’d even paint the ceilings semi gloss 😉
You are so fortunate your husband goes along with your choices. What decorating freedom!

I love the entry way picture with the slope of that ceiling just inside the door but I’m a big color gal so putting a navy blue in there somewhere would appeal to me! Do what ever appeals to you in your home, it is your nest and it’s the place you’ll want to feel the most comfortable. I agree with Suzanne, trends are for people who don’t know what they want. Do what makes you happy!
When it comes to decorating your own home, the only rule you should follow is “does it make you happy?”. The only style for you is “this, and this, and this together made me happy”. Trends are for people that don’t know what they want so they go with other people’s choices and pretend they’re happy. Can’t wait to see all the stuff that made you guys happy.

GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRL. I gasped when I saw this in your insta stories. I LOVE this photo. Mauve, Navy and Gold were my wedding colors. It blurred into “all shades of pink”, but mauve was my original paint chip.
I picked the same photo as you! I painted daughter’s room Hale Navy. It goes great with all of her Elsa art! 😛
I can’t wait to see what you do with the new house!
I love your style and know that what you do will look great!
