How’s the nursery coming along?
I’m here to tell you… I still love the nursery the way it is. AND we’re having another girl. So why? WHY?
Almost everything in this nursery was DIYed by yours truly and the man child, and we furnished and decorated it for less than $400.
(Find all the details of this room, including tons of tutorials HERE!)
I would say, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ …except I don’t believe that at all. If it ain’t broke, but you don’t like it or use it anymore, then BY ALL MEANS get rid of it! Improve it! Adjust it! Paint it!
So, I’m not writing an entire blog post just to tell you that the nursery is staying the same. In addition to the new super sentimental baby quilt, I’m replacing these giant tissue pom poms.
Don’t get me wrong, I like ‘em. But they’re looooong gone. The girls thought it would be fun to pull them down and destroy them, which I should have expected when I had them continue sleeping in the crib until they were 2 1/2.
Anywhoodle…
I’ve been brainstorming ideas for what to put in it’s place. I’m wanting to stay away from traditional mobiles, and I like the idea of a big bulky somethingorother there for interest (both mine and the little nugget).
So you, my friend, are about to be the lucky recipient of my brainstorm. And maybe I can get some opinions in the comment section! Usually some original/brilliant idea on my own and just go with it, but I found myself doing some ‘Pinterest research’ (GASP!) for this one. There are so many good ideas out there, and this girl needs some inspiration.
One idea is to go with the same ‘giant dangling ball’ concept (giggles). Aren’t these gorgeous?

I do also love the use of garlands, but I’m not sure how to incorporate these so they’re OVER the crib, and not flush against the wall. Still pondering.

So then I got to thinkin… what if the garlandy-types were to dangle straight down over the crib? These are beautiful.

Of course, I could always do a combination of big fluffy balls AND garland like this one.
Then I saw this cute tutorial for making little butterflies from paper, and loved the idea that the girls and I could make a bunch of these together! So my search turned toward butterfly specific garlands and mobile ideas.
SO! Now that you see where my head’s at, what are your thoughts? Do you have a favorite? Do you have a better idea for me? What’s above YOUR baby’s bed? Let’s chit chat in the comments!
I REALLY like the combination of the pom poms and the garland (second to last). You could easily just use the butterfly garland and weave it in and out of the poms and lanterns. Can’t wait to see what you decide!
I always want to have something that can move over the crib. Nothing motorized or anything, but something that you can spin around for her does wonders for calming an over stimulated babe. My little guy has this over his crib now. I thought about making it myself, but then I thought “ain’t nobody got time for that” because we were moving into our current house when I was 8+ months pregnant… So I ordered the expensive etsy thing. Baby boy loves it. Totally calms him to watch them gently spin around. Also, this shop owner was just lovely.

That is soooo super cute! Thanks for the idea!
Thank you for your concern! This images is from before our first(s) were born, so the bumper pad currently isn’t on anymore. We’re looking into those mesh bumpers, or none at all. 🙂
How about using the yarn tassle garland attached to a couple different sizes of embroidery hoops? They could be teired or hang separately.
Ooo I do love the tiered idea… and I never thought about embroidery hoops. Thanks for the ideas!!!
Those are all so sweet. I like the idea of something along the lines of a garland!

The room is cute but those crib bumpers should go ASAP!
they are all gorgeous! but the bottom right butterfly one is my favorite. My only hesitation for a garland would be the girly pulling it down someday and getting tangled in it but that could be just paranoia talking.
Yes, that’s a concern of ours too. Whatever we put up, we’ll likely be taking down once the tyke can stand in her crib. 😉
That IS a good idea, but I wish they still had ornaments in stores 🙁 We’re about a month late!
Oooo I hadn’t thought of that! I looove that look and it would be fairly easy. Thanks for the idea!
Wow I love that so much! It’s so bold and geometric! I bet your babe looooved staring up at that. So unique and bright!
Love the butterflies!
I used to follow a blog that is no longer active, but I randomly remembered her daughters name and that she had hot air balloons, so I found the page! Thought you might like the ballons idea.

Ooo I do love those little hot air balloons!
I think a combination of the tissue paper rosettes with butterflies dangling or draped as bunting would look great.
I have a thing for “globes”! You could do little ones! http://inhabitat.com/gorgeous-recycled-globe-chandelier-lights-up-our-world/globelamp-ed02/
Those are SO AWESOME! I’m not sure I could make those though… and I’m not sure if they’re for sale. I might start brainstorming how I could fashion something similar though. Would be so fun in a playroom!
Like this, but you separate the globes at the Equator! lol http://www.addicted2decorating.com/make-a-pendant-light-out-of-an-outdated-world-globe.html
I love butterflies…I sent in the butterfly fabric for the quilt. 🙂 That butterfly garland and the mobile are so cute. You have such great ideas. My daughters nursery was Baby Muppets. LOL
I love your butterfly fabric! I’m not sure I want to go so far as having a butterfly ‘theme’ in the room, but I do love the idea of adding some butterfly flair to the mobile thingy. Hmmmm!
Combo, but I totally love the butterflies and those mod triangles…..it would tie into the girls’ big girl room! I am totally with you on the traditional mobile. I think they are awful. I was on a pinterest spree trying to find something unique for my daughters room and I wanted it to be graphic…..so I DIYed it also….check it out below!

Have you ever found that the paper balls got super dusty by just hanging there for a long time? I love the idea of all of these but I am wondering how long they stay “fresh” ;-)….
Well this time around we won’t be leaving this up as long… two years was pushing it, and we don’t want to give the tot the opportunity to pull it down and destroy it. We didn’t really have a problem with dust last time anyway, and the tissue balls we up for 2 years!
I like the combo idea too. Butterflies and flowers would be so cute.
You could do a garland canopy above the crib… So pretty!

Well I LOVE butterflies, in fact I have that top right one pinned because I love it so much but have no idea what I would ever do with it cause I have a 16 year old boy. 🙂 but that’s my vote even thought the hanging garland was cute too.
I purchased a ton of leftover Christmas ornaments from hobby lobbys clearence (gold glittered feathers! Pink …balls!) to dangle down mixed in with fabric scraps….it turned out great! Just an idea for some added flair! Christmas ornaments these days are not all christmasy.I’d be happy to show you a pic
I love the butterflies with tulle. I currently have a two and a half year old still in his crib (with no intention of taking him out anytime soon), with nothing above. He’d likely destroy anything we put above it. I do, however, have poms and glow-in-the-dark stars in my ten year old’s room.
Good job finding a way to decorate for boys! If we were having a boy, I was going to enjoy the challenge of decorating for a boy, because it’s definitely not as easy, and there’s not as much inspiration out there!
I really like the butterfly garland, but the hanging roses are also adorable!! IN BOTH SIZES! Sorry, I’m of no help!!!
Haha! Too many good things to choose from, right? At least it’s a good problem to have. 🙂
That is true! Good Luck =]
I love the combination of the big puffy balls and garland–and I think adding butterflies that you create with your daughters would be the perfect addition. They can tell their little sister they helped make her nursery more special and just think how proud they would be and what fun to do this project with them…
Love the idea of the puffy balls WITH the dangly butterflies! Good thought!
Love the combination idea of the best. The garland hanging around the different balls could be made out of butterflies that you and the girls have created. Can’t wait to see what you decide!
Agreed! And I’m seeing a trend of people loving this idea!
I love the many paper butterflies, but living in the southwest, dust is a huge issue, so how would you keep the dust off of the paper without destroying? Just a thought.
There never was much dust with the tissue paper balls we had last time, but if the dust became an issue with the paper, I could take it outside and shake it out every couple months.
The dangling triangle one really seems your style, but the butterflies would be fun to do.
Do you think the dangling triangles would clash with the baby quilt that will be hanging nearby? I’m worried it will be too much geometric-ness. 😉
love love love the dangling rose garland!
I like the combination of garland and balls, and maybe add some hanging butterflies for a whimsical touch? Or butterfly garland with flower balls! Who says you can’t have it all?
True! I love the combo idea!
Ooh – I think I love that last butterfly mobile/garland the best.
Pretty right?! There are so many elements!
