We spend a lot of time blogging about creative stuff, and how cute our babies are… but I decided we’re due for an update on all the happenings around our acreage.
- It’s been HOT. We had something like 13 days in a row that the heat index was above 100. Only recently have we been able to venture outdoors with the girls and walk the ‘nature trail’. Which has been hard, because it’s been our nightly ritual to go on a family walk after supper (the time of day when the girls are the most crabby) to calm them down to get ready for bed.
- Our kitty, Blanche, had a record setting litter of… wait for it… NINE KITTENS. Anybody looking for a new fuzzy companion in about 5 weeks?
- Our garden is doing pretty good. Our carrots and lettuce look a little sad, but everything else seems to be doing great! We’re excited to have some fresh/free-ish produce! But the best part is that Nick announced to me that weeding is therapeutic for him. So he’s been a real trooper about weeding! I love that guy.
- Speaking of gardens, Nick and I were weeding together in the flower garden that my mom planted for us (THANKS MOM!), and Nick jumped into the air when he saw this little guy laying in the dirt.
- He had fallen out of the birdhouse above, and it was a legit miracle that we found him before Reuben got to him. Nick scooped him up with a trowel and dumped him back into the hole of the birdhouse.
- In addition to the scorching heat here in the Midwest, we’re also in a bit of a drought. Our grass has a widespread problem with being DEAD. It’s brown and crunchy. But the one upside to dead grass is that I don’t have to give up my husband to mowing 6+ hours a week, because the grass isn’t growing! We went 7 weeks without having to mow… crazy.
That’s it for acreage updates!
Look like its a wonderful outdoor place. Love this place and Thanks to you for share this!
Love your house and land. I live in a city and often dream of living out in the country with a nice porch and tons of land!! And I personally loved all the kitties! That is what happens on a farm…animals have babies!! I am a cat lover too but I don’t see getting so upset about the cat not being neutered!!
I love the pics of your home! It really does look peaceful like a great place to raise a family. Dont fret about the grass, it looks like that everywhere and it is nice to have the break from mowing! :)I’d move to the country in a heartbeat.
Garden looks great. Although there hasn’t been any rain here in a long time either, my garden is still growing. I am glad that my husband isn’t out mowing either. We did a little touch up with the weird weeds this last week.
OMG what a great post!! I loved the kittens and the baby bird!! Such cuties!!
I grew up with farm cats that weren’t fixed too, and I have to say that the babies can get very out of hand in just a couple of years to the point where the babies will start getting sick and dying or loads of other problems, so do be mindful of that with your sweet little ones. We lost dozens of babies to distemper and had to watch their eyes bulge out and my parents still never fixed our cats. We live in Johnson county, and here if you are in a lower income bracket, you can get cats fixed at the shelter for about $20. For a family of four, those income limits are pretty generous, so you might want to look into it. It was always really heartbreaking for me as a child to watch baby kittens die every year or to see the boys fight and get driven away or killed by other males, and that’s what happens when you end up with too many. You can always adopt more but keeping them all healthy when they are free to breed repeatedly is very very difficult.
Seeing your home and surroundings makes me want to move further out in to the country. We live in a small development in between Norwalk and Martensdale 🙂
We haven’t spayed our farm cats, because they’re farm cats. And we don’t have a few hundred dollars laying around to put toward that. We’d like to eventually though.
Why haven’t you spayed the cat yet? She just keeps on having babies!
Your home is so beautiful. It looks so peaceful and quiet. We live in Oklahoma City, OK, so I know how you feel about the sweltering temps! My LO’s hate being hot!
How close is your nearest neighbor/town? I have always been terrified to live in the country because I’ve watched waaaayyy too many horror movies and I work in crime victims services and I am just convinced that homicidal psychopaths will get me and I will have no where to run for help!
