Nick and I were planning to build the girls a little table and chairs for coloring and crafting, but as their birthday neared, we decided to wait until Christmas so they’d be a little older and more likely to appreciate and use it. BUT! I was strolling through Goodwill the DAY before their birthday, and found this extremely cute vintage-y industrial-ish table and chairs for $5. I just couldn’t control myself. It was too cute. And so I brought it home. It was meant to be.
I knew I had limited time to whip this thing into shape, with their birthday being the NEXT DAY and all. So I started by removing the metal legs from both chairs and the table. Then, I lightly sanded the metal with 100 grit sandpaper, just enough to rough it up so the primer would have something to grab onto.
I primed with Kilz and painted a glossy white.
Next, I primed the seats and backs of the little chairs, and painted them using Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze that we had left over from the Eloise Vanity.
So next was the table! But let’s back up a bit.
You may have noticed, I’m a little crazy about painted-on patterns. Like what I did in my pantry/laundry room, the backboards of this, this, this, and this china cabinets. And ever since I compiled my ‘Pattern Collage’ (showing tons of patterns, their names, and descriptions), I’ve been swooning over both Chevron and Ikat. And I realized you can totally combine both patterns to make a Chevron-y Ikat-y goodness.
And when I came upon the following painting on Pinterest, I knew exactly what I had to do.
If you’re head-over-heels for this painting, you can purchase it at this Etsy Shop for $989. OR, you could do what I did and whip out a paint brush and a few acrylic colors and get your paint on. How hard can it be to make some sloppy squiggly zigzags? I’ll tell you, not hard at all. In fact, it’s easy-slash-fun!
After I primed, and painted the little thrifted table, I brought it into the house after the girls were in bed.
And while Nick read to me (we’re through with the Hunger Games, and on to ‘Wild’ by Cheryl Strayer) I quickly drew on a sloppy zigzag, making it purposefully random and ‘off’. And then I just squiggled my brush over the line I’d painted so it looked like this:
I did a few in the same color, using various thicknesses of ‘chevron’. And then moved on to my next color.
And I just kept adding colors until I loved it!
You can do this on a big ol’ canvas and have an AMAZING piece of artwork over your fireplace or behind your sofa… custom painted by YOU, using colors that perfectly complement the room it’s meant for! Or even as an entire accent wall!
I sealed it with Polycrylic (which is water-based), and LOVE how durable it is for kids.

I used colors that would coordinate with our kitchen because I wanted to park it right under this window so the girls can color and craft while I’m cooking and cleaning and being all wifish. Here’s my view from behind the kitchen sink (which is in the island).
I could do dishes all day with this view. And that’s saying a LOT… cause I hate doing dishes. More than I hate cleaning toilets. That’s a lot. (note: it takes a special person like myself to speak of toilets when my sweet babies are sitting gleefully at a pint-sized table before me).

Now go forth and paint something Ikat-y and Chevron-y! Ikron! Chevat! How about neither!

I have a chevron painting half-way done! I’m not in love with it…. but I’m going to try and layer some metallics over the colors I have
As the artist of the original painting, I’m not sure how I feel about this…
Of course it’s child-friendly. We would never paint something for 12-month-olds that wasn’t safe for them to chew on. We sealed everything with Polycrylic, so it’s waterproof and baby-safe.
Wonderfully creative. Babies do a lot of putting things in their mouths, though. Is the paint and rustoleum baby-safe?

P.S. I see the toucan and stripe dresses in the side ground (I made up that word). We TOTALLY have those dresses for our twinsies too! 🙂 How mad were you when you found out only the polka dot dress came with a diaper cover? I was pretty upset. Unless of course yours did and I just got the shaft…
