I think what goes above the fireplace is a pretty common spousal disagreement. In our house, I wanted art or a mirror above the fireplace, and felt that the TV shouldn’t be a ‘focal point’. But hubby wanted a TV above the fireplace because it’s the most central location and makes the most sense based on the most logical furniture/sofa arrangement.
I could see his viewpoint, but also there has to be a way to compromise… right?! We had a little brainstorm session, and decided a projector above the fireplace will give us the best of both worlds! It’s a whole home theater experience!

Projector
We did lots of research, and ended up purchasing this Home Cinema Projector. Hubby loves it because it has 3,100 lumens of color/light brightness, and up to 300 inches of life sized images. It’s like a large screen TV on steroids!
And I love it because it disappears when you aren’t using it. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS!
This pic is a bit distorted because it’s a wide lens, but I wanted to show the relationship between the projector and projector screen.

The picture is surprisingly clear and crisp! We can even watch TV during the daylight hours (though we don’t usually watch much TV during the day), unless the sun is shining directly onto the projector screen. We do have blinds on our windows that we occasionally pull down during daytime TV watching.
Projector Screen
The projector screen we chose was a little wider than we wanted (see pic below), but we ended up trimming around it since chunky moulding is a very prominent part of our living room anyway. This pic show how the projector screen looked before we trimmed around it.

For a TRUE “before” picture of our fireplace, check out this post! Can you believe how far we’ve come?!?!
You would never know that there’s a projector screen up there! Especially when you’re distracted by that chunky historic moulding and detailed walnut fretwork. *chef’s kiss*

The actual projector stands out more than the projector screen, but even that isn’t too obvious. I prefer it to having a TV above my fireplace… you can’t have it all! 🙂

Here’s another pic I love that shows the projector in the mirror! 😉

I’m so glad that Nick and I could compromise and have our living room look beautiful and function well for our family. Win win right? I hope you love it as much as we do!
