Indian Corn Cake Stand Tutorial

October 23, 2019 by Bethany Sy

If you’re looking to add some DIY autumn flair to your home, make this harvest-themed Indian Corn cake stand! So fun and easy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love the colors and patterns in Indian Corn. Mother Nature is such an amazing artist! I wanted to use a bundle of Indian Corn to make something autumn-y, and Indian Corn Cake Stand turned out so cute, I wanted to share!
I have this old glass cake stand that’s nothing special. It’s not even really a ‘stand’ because there is no pedestal… it’s just a glass plate with the cloche-y thing over it. So when I spied these wooden circles on Amazon, my wheels started turning.
I love Indian Corn… mostly because it’s a slight departure from your standard trendy pumpkin. And there are so many different colorful varieties that scream autumn! So I snagged a handful for this project, and gathered up my supplies.
Supplies for Indian Corn Cake Stand
  • Bundle of Indian Corn
  • Wooden Circle
  • Cake stand cloche
  • Super glue
  • Coffee Can
  • Wide ribbon (any color you like!)
Slice and Dice your Indian Corn
We whacked off the husk and sliced them all the long way on the band saw.
We measured the height of our coffee can, and cut them each to that same dimension.
Glue those bad boys
Using this super glue, I just glued these bad boys on one at a time!  (If you look closely below, I set my coffee can on a pair of tongs to keep it from a-rollin around on me).
There were some kernels flying off here and there… especially around the cut edges, but I just went with it. ‘Harvest’ décor doesn’t need to be perfect!
I tied a ribbon around everything to hold it all into place while the glue cured. And then I ended up LOVING how it looked with a ribbon, and embraced it as part of the design!
Oil your Wooden Circle
We sanded and oiled the wood with Cutting Board Oil which is totally food-safe, then glued it to the top of the coffee can… being sure to get glue both on the can and the cobs of corn. Then the glass cloche just sets on top!! I had an old glass cake stand that I swiped the top from, and you can get these pretty cheap at Walmart or Target. Or they have a great selection here on Amazon too.
Load ‘er up with yummies!
Here’s the truth… the only reason I made this is so that I’d have good reason to make these Pumpkin Scones for *cough* ‘staging purposes’. HELLO.
I’ll admit, I may have had a tiiiiiiiny bit of fun setting up this little vignette.
Did you notice the Mini Ladder Shelf in these pics? It’s a project that we did last fall… and it gets used ALL THE TIME. We built it for serving when we entertain, but we use it for décor, children’s books, storage, etc. Love it. Instructions to build your own here!
Do you guys decorate for the holidays? Do you have a fireplace… or fireplace envy? Or do you look for obscure reasons to make baked goods?
    I am so over envying a fireplace or anything to do with wood heat. Years ago I built a economical wood heating stove and heated our home for a few winters using wood heat. After hauling the wood in, cleaning the ashes, and stove pipe and the worries of things like chimney fires. seeing the sides of the stove and stovepipe turn cherry red on those windy cold Iowa winter nights. Oh and have you ever smelled what hot steel smells like when it gets that hot.
    of course you have to spend the fall weekends cutting firewood and hauling it home. $chainsaws, $Truck, $Fuel, and Time.
    Yep, I am over it. I would choose a propane furnace any day over wood heat.
    Somehow it doesn’t seem as romantic to me any more. Bob
    We don’t have a fireplace and I have serious mantel envy. Especially with 4 small kiddos running around I wish I had somewhere high out of reach to put pretty things on. For now, I use a cabinet in our living room — similar to your cadenza — for most of my seasonal changes. Plus, we do a fun craft wall for each season, so that changes every few months too.
    Thanks for this – I’m going to try it. For that cake stand (another pinterest find), you can also punch 4 holes and make it look like a button – just saying!
