Vertical Kitchen Organization

February 17, 2016 by Bethany Sy

A couple weeks ago when I posted the reveal of our Rolling Kitchen Island / Microwave Cart, several of you inquired about the hanging wooden canisters on the wall in the photo.

Custom DIY Rolling Kitchen Island ...with butcher block top, and a place for the microwave and trash! {Reality Daydream}

I got the idea to try this after seeing something similar on A Beautiful Mess, and I was going back and forth about whether to do a tutorial or not since theirs is wholly awesome by itself. But since I did some tweaks to make mine easier and cheaper… I thought WHAT THE HAY!

Supplies: (contains aff links)

  • Toilet Paper Holder
  • Dowel
  • Wooden Canisters
  • Shower Curtain Rings

The biggest difference is that instead of using pricey towel racks, I used cheap toilet paper holders with a dowel in between. This allowed me to make them the length I wanted rather than being dependent on whatever the dimensions of the towel racks were.

They were a lot cheaper than towel racks too. I bought the toilet paper holders at Walmart, but these one from Amazon are pretty similar. And I got the dowels at my local home improvement store. I took the toilet paper holders in with me to make sure I got the perfect size. I was surprised to see they had square dowels too! But round would work just fine as well.

I bought a few ‘bamboo’ canisters (similar to these) as well as some simple shower curtains rings. I drilled a hole toward the top of the canister using a bit slightly larger than the width of the rings. (Paisley’s pretty proud that she took the pic on the left of me drilling into the canister. It’s so exciting to have my own little photographers around now when I’m doing something that requires both hands!)

Then simply slide the shower curtain hook through the hole and around the wooden dowel, and click together!

I use mine for utensils and plants (the ivy is real, the yellow flowers are fake), but you could use this in different rooms for different purposes! I’m thinking my craft room could use this setup for paint brushes, markers, etc. And my garage for paint rollers, wrenches/screw drivers, etc! So functional and so many options! And so pretty too… if I don’t say so myself.

My favorite part is that it almost feels like artwork in my kitchen!. SO GOOD!

We’re still finishing up that butcherblock counter top on the Rolling Kitchen Island, so you can look forward to that soon!

UNTIL THEN… what little updates have you been doing to make your home more functional and organized? If you’re like me, you’re allllways looking for ways to make your home more tidy and run more smoothly with less effort! Win!

I love the idea of vertical storage – also you could run a hot glue gun across the bottom of the bamboo canister so it sits on the wall without moving around!

I love it! How much weight will those rings hold?

Ooo that’s a good question. The packaging doesn’t give a weight since it’s designed for a shower curtain. But I have them LOADED UP with kitchen utensils, and haven’t had them falter. But I wouldn’t put anything heavy/valuable in there just in case 🙂

If they have a good hard snap when you close them I would think they would hold good. Thanks for the reply!

What a great idea and turned out absolutely amazing. We’ve been re-organizing all kitchen cabinets to make them work better for our family. Still getting lost every now and then and look for the things in the wrong places but it’s so much more efficient now and the hubby is very happy since he got a say in it this time 🙂

Haha yay for efficient kitchens! And compromising with hubby’s! Kitchen renovations can be such a BIG JOB… but so worth it to have additional storage and a better layout!

Great idea and like you said adds some unexpected artistry to the kitchen (although your kitchen is very artistic). Tell Miss Paisley she took a great picture! Vikki in VA

Hehe, yes! Thank you! Paisley’s pretty happy any time she can ‘help’ with ANYTHING. I’ll exploit that as along as possible! WHEN CAN I TASK THEM WITH DISHES?!

I’ve been looking for a not expensive towel bar for a necklace hanging project in my bedroom – but like you said, they are expensive for not much. LOVE the idea of using toilet paper holders – next time at the HD, I’m going to have a look!

RIGHT?! I used this same idea for a curtain rack as well. Toilet paper holders are SO CHEAP! You could get them just about anywhere too… not just home improvement stores. Heck you can probably even get them at the Dollar Store. LOL! 🙂
