I love you guys for following along on this mudroom saga, and it’s finally time to share the reveal! But before I do that, let’s take a little walk down memory lane.
When we added on the addition, this mudroom was added to attach the kitchen to the garage. Living in a state that has severe winters, this has been such a blessing to not have to go outside to get to the car. But also, mudrooms are convenient for other obvious reasons. Nobody wants coats and boots and backpacks strewn about any other room in their house. Amiright?
But anyway, we’ve been using the mudroom as-is for the past 5 years, bare drywall and concrete floor and all. It has served it’s purpose, but also LET’S MAKE IT PRETTY AND MORE FUNCTIONAL!
The goal with this space is to make it look as original to the house as possible. And since our house is historic and a Federal style, that means lots of ornate detail, molding, arches… CHARACTER. So naturally we designed and built our mudroom lockers to be arched and have detail that mirrors other features in our home. To see pictures of other parts of our house with all the historical character, click here. And you can find the building plans here!
We got some beautiful unlacquered brass hooks and knobs from Nostalgic Warehouse, and hurried up the aging process with this technique. Then, I decided that the metal exterior doors reeeeeally need to be wood, so I faux painted them using this technique.
The part that I was most excited about is getting this gorgeous wallpaper up! This is the Waratah Wonderland design in Marigold by Milton & King, and it was easy and fun to install! Have you ever installed wallpaper? I highly recommend using pasted wallpaper and NOT peel and stick. It’s more forgiving and easier to get just perfect. I have a tutorial here!
Look how beautiful that wallpaper is up next to our olive arched mudroom lockers!!
All that’s left is to install the brick flooring. Remember, the goal is to make this room look original to our historic home. And the brick flooring will mimic the exposed brick wall in the kitchen! We went with Brickwebb Herringbone – Boston Mill by Old Mill Brick, and it came in sheets of thin brick veneers that were already in the herringbone pattern! This made installation a breeze.
We added crown molding, trimmed around the windows and finished it off with baseboards… all mirroring the millwork in the rest of the house. And we’re ready to reveal this masterpiece of a mudroom with y’all!
We’re sooooo proud of how this room turned out, and are obsessed with every little detail!
Look at this before and after!
It’s been so fun taking y’all along for the ride, and we appreciate your encouragement along the way!
Stay tuned for more creative projects!
