I know a lot of you are intimidated to try my Shading with Stain Technique… but you shouldn’t be! If you’re playing around on a piece of scrap wood, or a junk piece of furniture you picked up curb-side, then YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE! Yes I’m yelling at you! Tee hee!
But in the spirit of trying new things, I thought it would be fun to play around with vinyl decals as a stencil for stained art rather than shading.

Recently Mohawk challenged us to come up with a unique and fun way to use their Ultra Mark stain markers, and I thought this could be the perfect opportunity! Playing on the new ‘adult coloring page’ craze, Nick had the brilliant idea that we could do a LARGE SCALE adult coloring page on wood! Using stain to color in all the beautiful details!
We got my friend Dana on board (she’s our talented friend with the giant vinyl-cutting machine and Etsy shop) and between the two of us, we drew out some designs as well as used some designs from past projects …to make one giant compilation of intricately detailed coloring page!
Dana arranged all the ‘components’ on her software program, and cut our Adult Coloring Page out on a piece of 2’x4’ vinyl. THAT’S BIG! (If you’re doing this project and using your Silhouette, you’ll have to weed out the pieces of vinyl where the stain is going and add transfer paper to put the vinyl on the wood. If you order one from Dana HERE, it will come already weeded and ready to transfer!)
Finallyyyyy we were ready to GET DOWN with our Ultra Mark stain Markers! There are sooooo many shades and colors, which made this project so incredibly fun.
If you watch the time-lapse video below, you’ll see that the whole family got involved with this wooden ‘coloring page’.
Isn’t it crazy watching that come together before your eyes? We’re a little obsessed with time-lapse videos. Partly because we don’t want to waste your precious time, and partly because it’s so amazing to watch something beautiful unfold in ONE MINUTE versus 3 hours. #amiright?
It was so fun and relaxing ‘coloring’ this in together! And the girls loved being a part of it all. And we have a beautiful piece of art in our home to show for it!
Imagine all the possibilities with soooo many different colors of stain markers… the sky is the limit! My brain is on overdrive with ideas!

That is beautiful. I tried doing it the same way you said to do it but the stain is bleeding under the vinyl. You have any suggestion what I could do to prevent this from happening?
That’s so strange Birgit! Are you using the same stain pens? The only thing I could think is that perhaps you’re pushing down too hard and allowing excessive stain to come out of the tip?
This could make a great headboard!
Wow, stain markers, that’s brilliant, and you made a beautiful piece with them! I think those markers are gonna be in my stocking this xmas. I love the things you make, love your site, I always open your emails!
Wow!! This is gorgeous! Great idea 🙂
