Y’all… this happens EVERY YEAR, and it’s embarrassing. And for some reason, it brings me joy to humiliate myself as often as possible here on the blog.
We get all pumped to plant a garden, and lay out our seed packets, and map out our rows. We plant, we label, we water… and then we subconsciously decide that our work here is done.
It doesn’t help that the grasshoppers have taken over a little, making us feel all downtrodden. I could come up with many excuses… truly.
But the main excuse is… we have more important things to do.
And when the minions are asleep, you can find us frolicking about in the garage, wielding power tools and paint brushes… and singing LOUDLY. Nick has the uncanny ability to switch songs in the middle of a word (which is not in the least bit annoying)… it’s like the lyrics remind him of another song, and he so smoothly transitions. Wow, I mean… it’s really special.
What I’m really trying to say here… is that the garden is not a priority. It’s not that we don’t have time, it’s just simply that other things are more important to us. When we get emails saying ‘WHERE DO YOU GET ALL YOUR TIME TO BE SO PRODUCTIVE?!’ The answer is simple… we enjoy family time, and being creative together as a couple… and that’s where we dedicate our time. At any given moment, you would probably find dishes in our sink and unfolded laundry in the dryer, and a garden that has yet to be weeded. But that’s how we like it. We feel fulfilled. We’re living the dream.
NOW, if only we could train this old boy to weed FOR us!
Instead of laying on our hostas all day long.

such sad looking lettuce leaves. I haven’t even attempted gardening. I’m lucky if any of my indoor plants stay alive.
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who blows it when it comes to gardening. The first summer me and Aaron were married, I was like “i’m going to be a perfect domestic wife!” And I planted a cute little garden. Which died in a month. But we were too busy being newlyweds. So, I guess that was a good enough excuse. Keep enjoying your summer and your little minions!
Our garden looks quite similar. We have almost seven acres, three kids, and we both work outside the home. Plus, it has just been sooooooo hot lately. We have rabbits eating away at our beans, and moths have now taken over our squash despite the pinterest remedies to keep pests away.
Just before I read your hilarious post I had finished my post for tomorrow which is essentially the same subject: The Neglected Garden. And I really do hate having grasshoppers all over the place literally flying toward me. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
When the girls start to really color, get them some Crayolas! They are so much better than Rose Art. Sorry, I am a Crayola loyalist. And collector. 🙂
Beth, I’m guessing your garden is full of variety (weeds, too), and I don’t know how large it is, but I’d maybe (next year) plant a few (that’s 3 to me) tomatoes and green peppers, whatever you like, then buy beans or sweetcorn or melons from farmers’ market, and feel no guilt that you didn’t grow it yourself. I think there’s less waste when you are planning your meals, too, and can just pick up what you plan to eat. I don’t have a garden this year, what with the odd, wet spring, but get what I need from farmers’ market and roadside stands. Enjoy your girls, hubby and summer, and feel no guilt! I have used Preen in the past, between the rows of produce, and it really keeps the weeds at bay. I don’t use it up close to my produce, since I can spend a few minutes weeding there, but water the garden after applying it, and the ‘barrier’ it creates eliminates hours of work. But I wouldn’t let the girls play in the dirt there. Maybe have a small raised bed garden for the girls to work in…flower pots, even. Someday, you and hubby will have more time to maintain a bigger garden. Then you and maybe mom can get together for sweetcorn freezing or tomato or salsa ‘work days.’ Share the work, and mom takes some home, too. (Did I just ‘volunteer’ you, K?) Happy summer! KE
Have you ever heard of square foot gardening? If you want to still have a garden, but a lower-maintenance one, this might work for you. Like you, I told myself I’d get one in last spring, but that didn’t happen due to…life. So I can’t tell you from personal experience if it is really better or not, but I can tell you it sounds awesome. But it is still on my to-do list, and since you get to build a raised bed, this might be a good fit–you still get to use power tools!
I’d like to garden someday, but don’t beat your self up. Your happy and living the dream, hire a kid and teach him weeds from plants. that might work? Mary in NY

Hubby & I are empty nesters…and we luv it! (well, except for two adorable wiener dogs). Gardening (vegetable & floral) is my hubby;s passion…I am just the “pointer”.
And I love to decorate our home…my second passion…after my fur-kids.

I have the garden from H-E-double hockey sticks. And it’s very small. I pretty much did nothing with it this year except have my hubby till it under. Now THAT’S something I can deal with…

Have you ever seen the movie Pitch Perfect? If not, you MUST. It is hilarious. They have an a cappella “Riff-Off” where the point is to start a song, then someone jumps in at any given word and switches the song to another with the same word in the lyric. Sounds right up Nick’s alley!! He would totally win.
I… LOVE that movie. I wish we owned it, because I’d watch it a lot. 🙂 The only scenes I don’t like are the barfing scenes… ICK.
