This is one of those no-fail Christmas cutouts recipe’s that NAILS IT every time. Whip up a batch and get out your cookie cutters (This variety pack from Amazon is the one I have… love it!)

THE MOST PERFECT Christmas Sugar Cookies
- 1 cup butter (softened)
- 2 cups sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 4.5 cups flour
Mix the first 3 ingredients well with an electric mixer. Then add the remaining ingredients and mix until well blended. Chill dough for a at least 2 hours. Roll 1/4-1/8” thick on floured surface. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and put on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 8 minutes (or so)… I like to take mine out before the edges get golden brown, because I want mine soft instead of crunchy. And I let them sit on the pan for another good 5 minutes to continue cooking before putting them on a cooling rack.

I used this cut out cookie recipe just last night, and we had a big Christmas-Cookie Decorating PARTAY with my girlfriends from our MUGGS Mommy Group, and everyone brought a different color frosting, and some sprinkles. It was PURE CHAOS and PURE FUN!
Now that it’s over and the girls (and Nick) are quietly napping, I think I’ll go have a stiff drink strong cup of coffee and stare blankly at the wall. Because I’m feeling a bit like this:
Have you been doing any holiday baking? Are you ‘known’ for a certain delicious cookie or treat this time of year? What’s your go-to cookie? Do you feel claustrophobic when there are dozens of small children everywhere and food flying through the air? Me too! Let’s be friends!
P.S. if you’re a teacher, daycare provider, or somesuch miracle worker, I tip my hat to you. And I guess we can still be friends.

Any idea about how many cookies each batch makes? I made two batches for 6 kids to decorate. Hope it’s enough! Looks like a lot. 🙂 We can not wait to try them!
Bethany @ Sawdust and Embryos says
THAT is an excellent question! I’m not sure! But I know I made 3 dozen last year for a huge cookie-decorating party with about 12 kids, and it was just about right… so you should have more than enough with two batches for 6 kids. I’ll have to pay attention to the yield next time I make these and add it to the post!

EXCELLENT recipe! Just baked these with my girls this morning and they turned out beautiful. Very yummy. I cant keep their Dad or their Pawpaw out of them. I did throw in a tsp of almond extract along with the vanilla just for grins and giggles. Thank you so much for sharing. This is now my “go to” sugar cookie recipe.
Bethany @ Sawdust and Embryos says
Yay I’m glad you love them as much as I do! 🙂

With made almost this recipe with 3 grands this weekend mine called for sifted flour and to grease pan which I don’t remember doing the last time I baked these the first batch was a blob. By the last two batches you could actually tell what they were. I’m trying yours next year. Grands had a blast. All the Santa heads looked like pirates. Lol

It is so stressful to have a house full of rugrats…it always makes me anxious but in the end it is fun!

I will have to try this I am getting together with my sister’s and my mom on monday have you ever tried using powdered sugar instead of flour to roll them out it keeps the sweet taste but not to sweet and doesn’t get that flour taste to them.
Bethany @ Sawdust and Embryos says
I’ve never tried that, but it sounds intriguing! I’m making a mental note for next time!

Your cookies look great! I made shortbread cookies two weekends ago. I made them in the shape of trees and bears. The bears look like bunnies when turned upside down. Anyway, that’s the extent of my baking this year.
Bethany @ Sawdust and Embryos says
Ooo shortbread cookies sound soooooo good! I LOVE me some shortbread!
Loren says
In the recipe is “soda”, baking soda? And small t. means teaspoon?
Thanks.
Bethany @ Sawdust and Embryos says
Yes and yes! I’ll go update that so people aren’t confused. Thanks!!

Ug… I REALLY need to do some holiday baking. My neighbors might not get any gifts from me this year. :S Hopefully they understand! I LOVE a good sugar cookie recipe. I must give it a try when I can get my bum standing up and in a kitchen.
Bethany @ Sawdust and Embryos says
I’m pretty sure no one will be judging you for not hauling your full-term-pregnant-self into the kitchen this Christmas. Just enjoy everyone ELSE’S baking! 🙂
