Kids Playing Card Holder

January 17, 2017 by Bethany Sy

Nick and I both grew up loving ‘family game nights’, and are so excited that the twins are old enough to really understand and participate in many board games and card games! But one thing they haven’t mastered is ‘fanning’ their cards in their hands so they can easily see the hand they’ve been dealt. So we put on our problem-solving caps and made a little wooden gadget that helps them easily display their hand of cards!

Supplies for Kids Playing Card Holder

  • Scrap wood with 1” thickness (ish)… any species!
  • Digital Angle Gauge (optional)
  • 120 grit sand paper
  • Behlen Dye Stain in colors of your choice!
  • Cotton cloth
  • Rubber gloves

  • Tools for Kids PLaying Card Holder

  • Table Saw
  • Router and roundover bit
  • Miter Saw

. .

Start out by measuring and cutting your wood to 12” in length.

Then run that sucka through the table saw long-ways (technically it’s called ‘ripping) at 1”.

Crank your table saw blade to a 10* angle ( we LOVE using our Wixey Digital Angle Gauge for this!), and lower it to a height that will slice about halfway through your hunk o’ wood.

Boom! We ran the edges through the router to round them off a bit, but that’s totally optional. Next steps are to sand and then STAIN! We’ve been playing around with this alcohol-based dye stain called Behlen Solar Lux Dye Stain, and it comes in so many rich, beautiful colors!

This stuff is fade and UV resistant and doesn’t raise the grain!

Solar Lux Dye dries almost immediately, so it won’t work with my ‘shading with stain’ technique. But works beautifully for this type of application! And can be sealed with polyurethane 5 mins after applying!

We had so much fun making these! And they literally took 5 minutes to make.

My favorite part is that the girls will go get out a deck of cards and their Playing Card Holders and strike up a game together without me even suggesting it! However that’s not the case in this photo below. I totally bribed them to be models in my photoshoot.

They’re pretty cute little models, huh?

Hi. I want to do these for my kids. For a beginner dryer, what table saw would you recommend? Thanks.

Also good for disabled people. My mom and her friends get together to play cards weekly. One of her friends had a stroke. So another friend made him one with several rows. So he didn’t have to miss out on card nights.
