OK, it’s been awhile since I pleaded for your help, but the time has come again… and you ladies always come through for me! So here it is: “WHAT do you look for in a baby monitor?” There are so many out there, and their price ranges very so widely, I’m just at a loss. Is a video monitor really necessary? What’s this business about a motion sensor? Do some monitors get a clearer signal than others? If I were in the garage or outside, could I hear the babies clearly when they wake up? Are there certain brands/models that have less static? Please help…
Yours truly~
Someone mentioned to me that there are safety issues with the video monitors, as they are easy to hack and see whether you are home, etc. I wasn’t interested in a video monitor so I didn’t look into it, but you might want to.
Well, there is non-video baby monitor, e.g. MonBaby. It is snapped to baby`s clothes and connected with any mobilephone via the app. You can follow any data about your baby`s sleep and keep it in your app.
Get one where BOTH units can go cordless. It seems crazy that you might not be near an outlet, but I’ve had it happen on several occasions – especially when away from home.
Beth we also got the angelcare monitor for our little guy and it helps me sleep so good when we actually get to that point at night haha. I like it because the alarm will go off if the baby moves off the sensor and also with the breathing because I have heard that is a concern with SIDS is if the baby gets into too deep of a sleep they don’t wake up. So when the alarm goes off it startles the baby enough to get them moving and awaken to catch there breathe. Me and my sister both have them and it has helped in the move to there nursery. Our alarm went off once so far and its scarey but, its a relief to run into the nursery and see there little eyes awake rather than the other conclusion.
Hi Beth… Although the Angelcare monitor is pricey, we purchased it and have never looked back. It is a motion sensor that will alert you when the baby moves away from the middle (ie the bumper) and will alert you if there is no motion detected. It can detect just the up and down of a baby’s chest when they breathe. The good thing is when they grow up it converts to just a normal monitor. I was terrified to move our daughter into her crib but this really put my fears at ease because something else was worrying for me. It really is the best baby investment.
We did some research regarding which ones got the best reviews and range. Keep in mind, which I’m sure you will, most reviews tout the negative and very few will review on positives. Even with Aaron next door, we have the monitor on in our room every night. We got one with two receivers, one downstairs and one in our room. It works fine down in the garage but I’ll be honest, I don’t go much farther than the living room or quick run to the garage. Motion sensors…I haven’t heard anything real great about these. Some go off if baby take a little longer to take a breath, which they tend to do while sleeping at times. Video…personal preference. We weren’t about to pony up the dough for that one and we had very few “big” gifts bought for us so we had to decide where we wanted to splurge. I usually hear him moving around enough with the monitor to not need a visual feed. Good luck!
I really really wish I had spent the big bucks and got the video one. My brother and sister-in-law have one for their little girl and it’s SO nice that they can watch her put herself to sleep. Helped mom through the first few nights of baby sleeping all night. (that feeling of..OMG is my baby okay?- she just clicked on the video monitor saw that she was and went right back to sleep.) I spent those nights crawling out of my bed to check and make sure baby was okay. (half the time waking her up while i did that!) Even now that the little one is in a toddler bed it is awesome because they can check and see if she is actually in bed without going into the room to wake her. So..after all this babbling..my conclusion is go for the video one! I will be buying myself one if I can ever have baby #2. ..better yet..put it on your registry..amazing what ppl will buy you!:)
We kept our son in a bassinet in our room until he was 4 months old – I loved this because I was able to sleep better knowing he was right there and being I was breastfeeding it was just easier 🙂 I did however have a monitor for household chores, mowing and showers!!! For that reason I got one of the less expensive monitors that had a good range but lit up when there was noise. It lights up a little if they are just fussing or babbling and lights up a lot if they’re screaming. This way I could be mowing or showering and just peak at it now and then. I found it very helpful. I’ve heard the motion monitors get to be annoying because once they start moving and roll off of the pad than the monitor goes off.
I have a lot of anxiety so I really wanted one so I wouldn’t have to worry. Now I wish I had a video monitor so I can see what the kids are up to. The biggest thing is just sound though. I have the cheapest one on the market and I have no complaints.
I totally agree with Sommer. We just got a pretty cheap audio one and just used it if we were working outside while the boys were sleeping.
I never used a baby monitor. Trust me if those babies need you they will cry enough you will hear them across the house. And it also trains them to self sooth if your not running into the room every time they make a snort. You will hear every little breath, grunt, whimper and be awake all night all if you have a monitor next to your bed.
My kids would start to whimper and cry and sometimes just put themselves back to sleep if I didn’t run into their room. If they were hungry, wet or unable to fall back to sleep they would scream and I would hear them lol. It never hurts a baby cry for a few minutes.
If you want the monitor for naptime and stuff while your in the garage working then honestly a little cheapy one will work. I had the 1st step ones I think, they were seriously like $25 and it worked two doors down where my neighbor and I had coffee on her porch every morning.
I looked for one with good range just in case I was home alone and needed to go down into the laundry room or anything. I wouldn’t say video is necessary per say but if you think you’re going to be the kind of mom that hasn’t heard your child rustle around in 5 minutes and you’re tempted to run in there(Like I am) then I definitely suggest a video. Make sure it has a little clip on the part you keep because if you’re carrying stuff you’re not going to want to leave it behind. and you might want to receivers, one for you and one for your husband.
