Better Late than Never… right?

June 5, 2012 by Bethany Sy

I’m overjoyed to report that we FINALLY got our veggie garden planted. True, it’s June and all… but whatever. Sheesh.

Nick and I borrowed Tim and Carrie’s Roto-Tiller thing to till up our garden of weeds. That thing is HUGE and HEAVY. But it saved us a lot of time for sure. Can you believe the clouds in this picture? And that smokin-hot man-boy?

So here’s the deal, waaaaaaaaaaay back in the day I wrote a post discussing Stability vs. Spontaneity and how Nick is the ‘planner’ of the family, and I’m the ‘free-spirit’. With that said, I would just measure out some rows in the garden, plant my seeds according to the instructions on the back of the seed packets, and proceed to pat myself on the back and treat myself to a margarita.
Nick however, has to draw out a diagram.

That’s right, he drew a ‘to-scale’ map-thing of the garden, and where he wants to plant what. He’s even compiling a spreadsheet for each vegetable’s ‘days to germinate’ and ‘days till harvest’. How complicated and unnecessary!?! But I so appreciate that he’s taking an interest, and I’m hoping that this also means that he’ll participate in the weeding when it comes time.

This boy had his mind set on having 4’ square ‘quadrants’ for each vegetable, and felt so strongly about it that he actually physically measured out a grid on the plot o’ soil and stretched out nylon string to create a grid. I’m not even joking.

The girls quietly played together in the grass. I’m so grateful that they don’t mind the feel of grass or dirt. Country girls right from the start!

We finished planting just as the sun was setting.

And then we ended the evening by taking a walk as a family around our acreage. This is the life.

That is something I would do if we had a garden. And it is DIFFIDENTLY something my husbands sister and her husband would do. It looks like you had fun. Happy growing.

cool! I like the neon string, makes it looks like laser beams you have to step through. what’s that movie with catherine zeta jones where she does that? anyway that’s what it reminded me of.

Yay, Nick for drawing such an awesome diagram! I LOVE detailed, scaled diagrams. Also, I may or may not also be guilty of creating days to germination spreadsheets 🙂

    Congratulations on getting things planted!
