Wooden Caddy Building Plans – Unicorn Spit

July 28, 2016 by Bethany Sy

YOU GUYS are so stinking sweet and awesome about my Lyme Disease diagnosis, and sure know how to make a girl feel loved. I’m SO happy to report that the past few days have been amazing, and I’ve almost felt 100%. (I hope I didn’t just jinx it!) You better believe I made the most of it. It’s so weird not knowing which days will be good and bad, and makes me want to have my ducks in a row every night before I go to bed… just in case I wake up feeling like I’ve been hit by a truck.

Anyway! It’s easy to fake energy with excessive use of exclamation points!!! Am I right?!?!?! ENERGYYYY!!!!!

But seriously, I do have an exciting tutorial for you today. I whipped up a couple little wooden totes that can be used for SO MANY different things, and I’m gonna show you how to make one! A super simple building project.

Simple building plans for this veritile Wooden Caddy! SO many options! {Reality Daydream}

This post contains affiliate links.

I first decided to build one of these to keep my collection of Unicorn Spit paint / stain / glaze. I use this stuff all the time for various projects, and they’re so unorganized in a pile in my craft room. I’m always digging for a certain color, or trying to grab as many colors in my arms as possible for a craft project with the girls. It was a situation. So that’s the background info on what inspired this project. But I also love the versatility of these wooden caddies and I’m wishing I had one for each room. So let’s do this!

Supplies for Wooden Caddy

  • 1×6 pine board
  • 1” dowel
  • 1 1/4” Kreg Screws
  • Kreg Jig
  • Jigsaw

I started by cutting my board to the following dimensions with a miter saw. These are the components for the box.

I hit the edges of each with some 220 grit sand paper, and then drilled pocket holes with my Kreg Jig… as follows:

In hindsight, I went a little crazy with pocket holes… this thing will be STURDY. That’s for sure. If you don’t have a Kreg Jig, some glue and brad nails would do the job just fine.

Next, assembly!

Tutorial for building this Wooden Caddy {Reality Daydream}

I screwed together 3 of the sides, then put the bottom in, and finished up with the 4th side. I didn’t want to get all 4 sides together, and then have trouble fitting the bottom in. #beentheredonethat

Assembling Wooden Storage Caddy - FREE Building Plans! {Reality Daydream}

Now that my box is built, it’s time to start on the handle! You could use the dimensions/template from the building plans, or just use a ruler and something round to draw out your own. And don’t forget, you can cut one and then trace it for your second side so they will be identical!

How to build a wooden caddy {Reality Daydream}

I used my Jigsaw to cut these out, but you could use a band saw or scroll saw too. We drilled the holes with a 1” forstner bit and sanded everything a bit. And then put the dowel in and screwed those suckas into place. Don’t forget pilot holes!

You can see that we put some scrap pieces of wood underneath the caddy when assembling the handles onto the box. I loved how it gave the caddy ‘feet by raising it up a bit.

DIY Wooden Storage Caddy... can be customized to any dimensions! {Reality Daydream}

I stained this guy using the new Unicorn Spit shade called ‘Rustic Reality’ (don’t you loooove that name?!)

If I would have had the energy, I would have staged this thing up in so many different scenarios so you could see just how incredibly useful and adorable it is. But alas… NO.

But just think about it, you could throw in a bunch of mason jars as vases or to put paint brushes / markers in. You could use it for diapers / wipes. You could fill it with craft supplies, or legos, or snacks. Think bathroom counter with cute jars of q-tips, cotton balls, etc. Just so many options. The sky is the limit!

Wooden Caddy Tutorial and Free Building Plans {Reality Daydream}

Side note: YOU GUYS… I’m obsessed with plants. That is all. ^^

Here’s what I did with the second caddy that I built (specifically for my Unicorn Spit). I decided to change it up a bit and add some fun scalloped side. I also made the handle slightly shorter, and left off the little legs.

Don’t you love how this simple build can be modified and personalized however you want? You could easily change the dimensions to fit your needs too. So versatile!

Super versatile Wooden Tote - with Free Building Plans {Reality Daydream}

I traced the bottle of Unicorn Spit to get the scallops exactly the right size, and then I used the Unicorn Spit to stain each section… both for looks AND to use as a reference for knowing exactly what each color looks like on wood.

unicorn spit caddy

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Unicorn Spit… it’s like magical liquid gold. The colors are vibrant and numerous. And it can be used as paint, stain, glaze, and so many other applications. There’s lots more info on this post I wrote awhile back, along with tons of gorgeous examples of what it can do. And how it’s not toxic, miraculously smells like jasmin, blah blah blah.

I’m not getting paid to say any of this BTW… I just love this product and want the world to know.

    Praying for you to completely recover. I have had Fibromyalgia for 26 years. When I finally got my diagnosis, I thought to myself, “great I spend my life doing for others, and now the only thing I can do for Fibro is to take care of myself. Do I get instructions or what?!” I still do for others, but I did learn how to take care of me too.

Can the surface be sealed after application of Unicorn Spit? The tray is darling and clever. Definitely making a few.

    I’ve really been wanting to try some Unicorn Spit for a while. Those colors look amazing! And I love how you stained each section to make it easy to find what you want. Great idea!

    Oh I really like this idea, and I love your posts! It makes me feel like I could get out there and successfully use a table saw or hand saw. Sadly, I’m still banned from power tool usage (other than a drill). I’m pretty much the clumsiest person ever and my husband is terrified that I will cut off a finger or two. I’m still working on wearing him down….
