One of the best purchases we’ve made was our little digital Cannon snapshot that we picked up on our way to the airport for our honeymoon. It has gotten TONS of use. In fact, pretty much every single photo on this blog was taken with that little camera! It’s served us very well for the last 3 years, and we’ve even had several blog-stalkers compliment our photography and ask what kind of camera we use. And while I love it’s simplicity, I’ve been dreaming of a serious upgrade. I love capturing moments, finding fun angles, and experimenting with light. And the Cannon almost got thrown through the window on a couple of occasions.
Nick has been all secretive and giddy lately. And with my birthday approaching, I didn’t ask any questions. And naturally… he couldn’t wait until my birthday to give it to me.

And it came just in time to capture countless special moments with my baby girls when they arrive! I truly have no idea how to use it, but I can’t wait to learn about aperture, exposure, depth of field, shutter speed, etc!
Any suggestions or photographic wisdom from you pro’s is now being accepted!

The Olympus PEN is an awesome camera. It’s a great way to transition from a simple point-and-shoot to something with a little more meat.
Theres a website that shows all kinds of hacks and DIY setups. The article linked here is about lighting hacks. The website has tons of info on how to achieve professional quality photos with limited knowledge of cameras.

I also took photography in college and still have and LOVE my book – “Understanding Exposure” by Bryan Peterson. One of the best and really helps you understand visually what different settings do. I also highly recommend checking out Katie Bower’s Photography blog – http://www.bowerpowerblog.com/photo/. She’s a self-taught newbie photographer and her advice has been really helpful. And if you want a super cheap fun online version of PhotoShop, you MUST check out picnik.com. It’s great for post-proccessing.

I too bought a fancy shmancy camera with the arrival of my first child and boy-howdy did it get used and used and used. I learned so much!
I took photography in college and still have a basic textbook that I could give you. It’s really easy reading and teaches you how to change all the functions to get particular effects. I’ll bring it next time we see each other! 🙂
