It occurred to me that I probably ought to write a follow up post, describing the outcome of our Christmas tree ‘allergy’ dilemma. I wasn’t sure what we were going to do… and many of you made some very nice suggestions.
It was touch-and-go there for awhile. It sat empty for several days while I pouted, sneezed, and itched.
I was pretty miserable, both literally and figuratively. But I had the good sense to call my Dr. and ask if anything can be done to remedy this situation without us having to pitch our glorious (and expensive) Frasier Fir. I was given a green light to double up on my allergy meds for the month of December, and if that didn’t take care of it, he said he’d give me an allergy shot. To my surprise and relief, the doubling-of-the-meds WORKED! I can breathe!
So we cranked up the Mariah Carey Christmas and decked the halls baby!
There are so many beautiful Christmas trees in blog-land with white lights and handmade garland, with matching glittery ornaments… but we love our colorful twinkle lights and childhood ornaments. Wouldn’t have it any other way!
Since we don’t have a fireplace mantel, I took the liberty of decorating the top of our ‘new’ credenza as such.

To our amazement… the girls don’t mess with the tree! It was a bit of an experiment, not knowing how they would respond to a big glowing monstrosity containing lots of brightly-colored dangly things. But we just told them not to touch it from the very beginning… and they listened.
IT’S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!
They often just stand by it and look up at it in awe. Super cute. I wish I had a picture of this. It’s hard to capture photos at their age, because they don’t stand still for more than a second… especially once the camera is out.

Your tree looks so pretty. I’m a complete dork and I love N’SYNC’s christmas CD. It drives my family crazy when I put it on, but I love it.
We have a Christmas vow to each other that we will ALWAYS have a live tree. We both really like the colorful lights on the tree too, not the white ones. The white ones look great on other peoples trees though! We just got married a little over a year ago so we have a few ornaments that aren’t part of a set. My goal is to collect individual ornaments, to the point where the “set” is no longer in use. I think that would be a cute tradition and it would make our tree more personal.
We feel the same way about our tree (colorful lights and childhood ornaments versus matchy matchy and stylish). I love that another person (people) share our opinion! 🙂
Thank you, thank you, thank you! So nice to see a Xmas tree that matches my style. I could probably do single colour lights but my kids want the multi-coloured ones and I have ornaments saved each year from childhood. They are special to me but certainly wouldn’t work on a “theme” tree! This year I got to watch my kids (6 and 8) ooh and aah over each ornament and decorate most of the tree all by themselves. They wanted to hear stories about the ornaments they were unwrapping. I buy each one an ornament every year and store them in separate boxes. When they leave home they will have a start on decorating their own trees. No special Xmas music – mostly mixed artist renditions.
We always listen to Elvis Christmas. When my youngest was 3 she would not leave the tree alone. She knocked it over about 5 times in the span of a week. I got so fed up I chucked the whole tree decorations, lights and all into the garage where it laid until about April. LOL
Beautiful tree! Glad you could put it up. I have a 8 month old in a walker and a 2 year old running loose in the house at Christmas time. They usually are not the trouble. It is the 9 year old digging through the presents to find his that is the touble! My husband and I are hooked on Sarah Mclachlan Christmas CD. It is on constantly.
Ummm… We listen to Hanson’s Christmas album. I was OBSESSED as a teen and surprisingly, this album is really good. My younger brother and sister came to enjoy it as well!
As for our first tree with 1 year olds around, we have it in “Christmas Tree Jail”. My friend lent us an octagonal baby gate and we took links out of it to make it a sqaure to go around our tree. It fits perfectly and keeps the girls from it. Until Peyton figured out she could position and stand on the Elmo chair and reach the ornaments… They are some smart cookies. It looks so silly, but it’s all part of First Christmas Fun!!!!!
