Lately we’ve had a string of clients that makes us step out of our comfort zone and try something new! We love that! But this particular backsplash caused us a bit of anxiety the whole week before. Pam had her mind set on having a stainless steel-looking backsplash. And WE had our mind set on giving her what she wanted. Thomas Paints makes a “appliance paint” that’s meant to paint your stoves fridges and other appliances to have the look of stainless steel without the price tag. We’ve never used it in this capacity, so we can’t say recommend it… but we HAVE used it on a backsplash!!
The silver-chrome-ish paint was quite runny, and therefore we worried that there would be a lot of leakage under the tape. And because unlike natural tumbled “stone” tiles, stainless tiles HAVE to have a crisp edge. We did some practicing at home on a piece of wood that had been primed and painted, which helped our confidence a little. Here’s Pam’s kitchen before:
We taped her up, and rolled on a clear coat of PolyAcrylic to seal the tape down and minimize the capillary action. The Poly has to dry for 2 hours, so we ran some errands got the pregnant lady some nourishment.
Then we rolled on the shiny glossy ‘stainless’ paint.
And with a drumroll (in our heads) we removed the tape CAREFULLY… and it turned out pretty great!! Don’t you think it could really pass for stainless steel?
After this one, we breathed a huge sigh of relief. We love it when we try something new and it turns out awesome
Thanks Pam!
I LIKE THE STEEL LOOK! HOW ARE YOU FEELING?
