Fixing/filling damaged trim and millwork

June 19, 2019 by Bethany Sy

The solarioum is one of TWO rooms that I consider ‘done’ in this house.

So when our boy Reuben took it upon himself to chew on the woodwork in this room, I was beyond upset!

In his defense, we closed him into that room while we had company with little kids that are scared of giant dogs. He wasn’t in there for more that 10 minutes when we heard him faintly crunching away at the trim.

I thought about just repainting these spots so at least it wasn’t so obvious. But then I realized that my friends at Mohawk have a product JUST FOR this type of situation. And it’s magical.

This Epoxy Putty Stick comes in a bunch of different colors in case you’re wanting to match it to a wood tone. But they also have white, which is what we chose since we’re planning to paint over it when we’re done.

Simply slice off an amount of putty that seem about right for your project. You can always cut off more if you need to. It’s important to cut it with a sharp knife so it won’t prematurely activate the two components of epoxy.

Kneed your putty together until the two colors are mixed together completely, with no marbling. Then you’re ready to apply it! Just press it into the imperfection, and form it the best you can. If it’s a flat surface, use a putty knife or credit card to scrape it and get excess off. You have about 10 minutes before it dries, so no rush!

Finally, you’re ready to sand and paint!

This Epoxy Putty makes permanent repairs, is paintable, and doesn’t shrink over time.

I’m in SHOCK of how you can’t even see where all the holes and scratches were. It’s as if ‘the incident’ never happened!

Another view:

And another angle:

Impressive, right? And now I’m eyeing all the imperfections ALL OVER MY HOUSE that I can totally fix quickly and easily in ‘all my spare time’. LOL! I crack myself up!.

My solarium is back to being good as new… or good as 1932 I should say. 🙂 And Reuben is out of the doghouse.

Where did you get this product. If I order it online it’s only 11$, but with all extra charges is over 40$. Did you get it in a store ?

First of all, Reuben is outright adorable! I bet it’s hard to stay mad at him. We had a black lab for 12 years, best dog ever. Thankfully he never chewed up anything. What I do have, though, is a husband who thinks he can install doors, but routs the depesssion for the hinge plate in the wrong place on the door or he chips something off. Now, after looking at all of those booboos with dread, I finally have an easy way to fix them! Thank you!

Great article! I’m going to post it on FB. Our 100 pound canine “baby” liked to chew holes in the sheetrock. We couldn’t figure out how or why: it’s flat???? That patches easily. You’ve done a service to dog lovers and just regular homeowners with this. Thanks!

Thanks for posting this! We have a very rambunctious border collie mix who loves nothing better than finding new things to chew on. I will be ordering this right now. Hopefully she won’t want to chew it once I fix it!

I needed this information two years ago! We had to repair every single baseboard corner in our entire house (along with replacing all the stair rails) because of our beloved pup.
