Desk / Vanity for Molly’s Photography Studio

October 8, 2012 by Bethany Sy

Want to know what’s crazy? Nick has been promoted at work, and is starting 2nd shift at his job today. THAT means, he’ll be around all day until 3:30 when he leaves for work (and comes home at midnight). This could be really awesome, or REALLY not cool. We’ll see. I’m looking forward to having him around during the day to have more family time and work on projects and stuff. Also, I’m looking forward to going to bed whenever the heck I feel like it (I’m an early-to-bed-type). I won’t bore you with the things I’m not looking forward to. We’ll just see how things progress. I’ll keep you apprised!

Did you have a good weekend? Our trees were gorgeous for about 5 minutes before they lost all their leaves and things started looking like winter. Ugh… WINTER.

HowEVER… we finished a sweet little piece’o’furniture this weekend! And you’re about to see it RIGHT NOW YO. One of our readers contacted us awhile back, explaining that she just moved into a new place, and there was a big ol’ clunky desk that the previous owners left behind and she had no use for. And here she is in all her glory… (THANKS ROBIN!)

This sucker is Heavy with a capitol H! But that usually just means is sturdy and well-built. So we love that quality in furniture. Our girl Molly (from Molly Long Photography) is fixin’ up a new place to be her new AWESOME studio! (Remember we did this coffee table for her?) She had been looking for a desk or vanity for her dressing room, and this piece was just the ticket!

In her dressing room, she’s going for a ‘Hollywood Glam’ look, and is planning to have a big ornate mirror above the desk with those round globe vanity lights around it. Molly pretty much gave us free-reign to do what we want with it. She gave us this Color Palette that she’s going for in this room.

Pretty right? Don’t you love the Design Seeds website? SO many amazing color combos! So we broke out our sweet Sherwin Williams Fan Deck and chose this pale tranquil misty green… ‘Waterscape’.

After sanding, taping off all the drawers, we primed! (am I starting to sound like a broken record?! HA!)

Then, after painting everything ‘Waterscape’ green, I carefully taped around the outside of that inset area like so. (NOTE! The creamy green color is really hard to see in these photos, but it’s beautiful… promise!)

THEN… here’s the fun part, I’ll just let you look:

That took forever. But it was probably the hardest part of this whole project, so whatev! Next, I broke out some Krylon Metallic Silver!

This stuff rocks… it truly is SO metallic!

Finally, I got to pull back the tape/newspaper! LOVE THIS!

I painted the original hardware using Rustoleum’s Hammered Metal spray paint. Forgive me for not taking pics of this. But I’m loving the metallic contrast it provides!

And here’s the final product! Molly’s clients are going to feel super pampered in her chic and stylish dressing room. I can’t wait to see it when she has it all finished!

PA072835

Can you see it in a glamorous dressing room? I can! I’ll have to share pictures when Molly gets everything all set up! Cause these pictures in my living room just aren’t doing it justice! Especially with all the cords in the background. Heh…

And here’s the before/after!!

Happy Monday! I’m going to have another cup of COFFEE!

Beautiful.. Do you poly your stuff afterward? What finish of paint do you use? It looks nice and shiny on top!

We ALWAYS poly, and typically use Polycrylic. For paint finishes, we like the durability of Satin and Eggshell.

Thank you for the info on your spray gun. DH is in the process of redoing a dresser and he’s furious at me. He said we could have bought a new one for the money we’ve spent getting it ready. Since this will be our ‘last’ redo furniture (he says) spray gun is out of the question. So have to dig out the foam brushes.

I’m not allowed to paint (per doctor) as it causes an asthmatic allergic reaction. I sprayed 2 lamps and have been ill 3 wks. bummer…. Thanks again … love your work.

Congratulations on Nick’s promotion and I wish you the best on 2nd shift! We just came off 3.5 years of it, and it was hard. However, we are at a totally different place in life and so I’m hoping your family can just adapt to it for the entire time he’s working it! The kids and I had to get up and go to work/school, and then he was gone by the time we got home. Yeah, totally not where you are at with it! Just wanted to de-lurk and say I wish you the best with it. And I love the desk!

Very pretty!! I like how the reflection of the carpet make the metallic parts look somewhat pink 🙂 ~ Kristie

We almost always us Sherwin Williams and our Paint gun!

We occasionally use spray paint for small projects that don’t warrant a whole quart of paint. And in this case, we wanted a metallic look and thought we’d try out Krylon’s metallic spray paint! We’re glad we did!!
