Cypress’ Birthday

We celebrated Cypress’ first Birthday this week. It’s crazy even typing that out… HOW HAS A WHOLE YEAR PASSED? (her birth story here)

It’s one of things where I can’t even remember what our family dynamic was like before she was born, and yet it feels like she was JUST BORN YESTERDAY.

From baby to toddler!!

When the twins were this age, I remember them becoming very picky eaters after tasting yummy dessert-y things. So I’ve been really careful to keep Cypress on the straight and narrow of fruits and vegetables. I know for a fact that Nick sneaks her ice cream occasionally, but I can’t control everything.

Anyway, I wasn’t about to deny my girl her ‘smash cake’ experience, so I made myself falsely feel like it would be nutritious if I made her a carrot cake (this recipe). And then I proceeded to slop on tons of cream cheese frosting. One big cake for everyone, and one mini cake for her to destroy.

Growing up, my family had a tradition that the ‘Birthday Kid’ gets their picture on the table all day, and gets to use the special plate. As each of my siblings and I have graduated / gotten married, my parents have given us our very own identical special plate (you can buy them here) to carry on the traditions with our own families. And despite the fact that it’s ceramic, I totally plopped that sucker in front of her.

At first she wasn’t sure what to make of this slimy creation, and was just enjoying the sensory aspect of it all, but then she got a little taste…

Let’s just say she was a fan. And it was mandatory bath night.

My parents came to celebrate too, and Cypress was so confused and distracted when it came time to open presents. Good thing big sisters were there to ‘help’.

Gosh I look through these pictures and am just in awe of how blessed I am. Even though they’re grainy with bad lighting and lots of clutter… these are my people.
