A cabinet for the mudroom

It’s hard to believe this room could get even better after building those arched mudroom lockers, but it’s about to! We have this blank space to the left of the lockers that we desperately need for storage. Think off-season items, and a place to put things that need to be returned to the store. It would also be nice to have a location to put things that need to be taken to donation. Let’s see what we can come up with, shall we?

Now remember, the goal of this room is to make it look like it’s original to our historic home. Even without the need for it to look historic, this is a very custom build simply because of the need to go around the window, and also consider that bump-out on the lower part of the wall. It’s a part of the foundation and can’t go anywhere.

After some dreaming, here’s what we drew up. Try not to be jealous of my drafting skills.

Because this is such a custom build for such a specific space, we’re not sharing a step-by-step tutorial this time. We’re just showing the process and telling a story of how this space comes together! Please let us know if you have any questions in the comments below.

We wasted no time in cutting out the individual components and routing all the dados for the shelves. We then assembled the outermost cabinets and then glued together the center section. If you have ever tried to align multiple components at once, you know how big of a chore this was.

Using our Kreg Pocket-Hole Jig 720PRO allowed us to add pocket holes quickly and easily, and get this face frame put together in no time!

We love that it automatically clamps to the thickness of our wood without us having to make adjustments every time. Look at this perfection.

Now that we have the face frame on, it’s time to start working on that taller cabinet!

For the tall cabinet that will go on the left, we mirrored the arched detail from the mudroom lockers using the CNC machine (we have this one), and added some doors.

This part of the cabinet will have shelves and arched doors. We have some fluted glass on order, but it’s not ready yet. I’ll update this post with new pics when they are in!

We’re so happy with how this project turned out, and I’m so proud of hubby for being SUCH a talented craftsman!

We’re thinking about adding some cremone hardware to those arched cabinet doors. What do you think about that idea??
