Sometimes it FLOPS

December 14, 2010 by Bethany Sy

I get a day off from work, and what do I do? Nothing at all. I’m literally still in my Pj’s. And I’ve spent the majority of my morning thinking about all the benefits to having a fireplace… and how I long for one of my own. I feel strongly that winter would be more enjoyable with a wood burning fireplace. They’re warm, they smell of coziness, and they provide a point of interest in a living room instead of the television. Though my argument is strong, we are without a fireplace.

Natural heat source aside, I would like to share a less than successful project. It wasn’t a complete fail… but I wouldn’t recommend it, that’s all. We had this wall that was kinda of haphazard and less than interesting.

And during one of our multiple weekly trips to Menard’s, I stumbled upon this ‘dry erase board PAINT.’ And I decided to ‘paint’ on a dry erase calendar in my kitchen!!

We started out by taping off the area, and SEALING it with polyacrylic to prevent any white paint from seeping under the tape.

We then primed with Kilz.

Next came the dry erase paint… which was very runny and messy. And the coverage was minimal. We ended up putting about 6 coats on before it truly started looking white. (sorry no photos of this step). We followed the instructions to a T, and we never got a smooth shiny white-board finish. It was a little bumpy… and sad, really. But unless your right up close, it looks ok. JUST ok.

Not our finest choice of project, but a learning experience at the very least. Next time, we’ll try the chalkboard paint.

Bottom line, we don’t recommend this product. We won’t be painting over it anytime soon, but we’re definitely not bragging about this one. The end.

The wall is totally damaged from the dry erase paint shrinking, so we have to tear it off and repair the drywall, and THEN repaint. But it’ll be sweet when it’s done. And even if it’s not perfect, there will be a NEW calendar hanging in it’s place! ‘Hanging’ being the key word. 🙂

SO glad to see your review on this. Every time I pass by, I just can’t convince myself that it’s a good idea and now we know. Do you think it will be easy to paint over? I’m just wondering if since it is slightly raised off the original paint if you will still see a raised calender!

Ya win some, ya lose some. Way to be honest! And thank goodness it’s only paint!
