A Very Colorful Post

May 19, 2010 by Bethany Sy

Today, May 19th, is my man-boy’s 28th birthday. I secretly took a half day at work in the interest of planning the festivities of the evening. Due to the fact that it’s the middle of the week, said festivities are to include: birthday cake, presents, and me wearing something scandalous.

Did I say that out loud?

I baked this fun non-manly rainbow cake. The reason being… well I just really have high standards for my cake baking. It’s a sickness really. To the point that on his first birthday we spent together, he never even saw his royal blue Bass Guitar cake I baked for him, because it looked pretty globby. And let’s face it, I needed to impress this boy at that point. And this year, I was experiencing difficulty thinking of an awesome cake to make, and after doing some internet cake exploration, I found the recipe for this rainbow cake. It just looked too yummy not to make.

If for some reason your hands ever have this much food coloring on them, please refrain from picking your wedgie. Just let it ride.

I’m really disappointed in the “red” food coloring. Why don’t they just call it PINK, and put a disclaimer on the box, stating, “we apologize, but our product is not quality enough to produce a true red, so please be advised that no amount of red pink food coloring will make for a true RED. We sincerely apologize for our inept product.”

My lovely creature boy arrived home from work, and we celebrated by immediately eating cake… very colorful cake. That quite frankly didn’t taste as good as it looks.

And then there were presents!!! Carefully wrapped in newspaper and masking tape. I’m not afraid to admit that my gift wrapping standards are substantially lower than that of my cake decorating skills. Most of his gifts were things he needed anyways… socks, undershirts, boxer briefs, and a brand new razor to replace the one he’s been using for the last 12 years. But the best present of all? A wheelbarrow… that we’ll probably return. Because it’s the wrong thing. But I’ll still pat myself on the back for buying something like a wheelbarrow.

Happy Birthday honey bunny bunches of love!

I’ve always wanted to make one of those cakes! Jon’s birthday is this week as well and his gifts will be very similar, white tee shirts and a new pillow. Life is exciting when your older isn’t it.
