Paisley Magazine Rack

February 9, 2012 by Bethany Sy

I know I promised to reveal our vanity makeover this week… but it’s going to have to wait. We’ve been busy, and haven’t gotten around to hauling that bad boy in the house to take pictures. A tragedy for sure. But we have another little project to share!

So we had this little antique magazine rack that suffered from Lack-O-Personality Disorder (I assure you this is a real disorder… all 5 of my brothers have severe cases).

We originally thought we’d just paint it a bright cheerful color to give it some life
…but we hated it.

So we wasted a can of Krylon Bauhaus Gold… oh well. Well then we got to thinkin’ it’d be shnazzy to decoupage some pretty paper on the side panels of the magazine rack, and paint it a color that complements it! So we toyed with the idea of using scrap-booking paper, or wrapping paper… but we didn’t have anything we liked on hand. But then Nick’s very occasional stroke of genius kicked in, and he suggested we go through our enormous plethora of gift bags we acquired via wedding/baby gifts over the years.

I knew it when I saw it… this AMAZING vintage-y feeling paisley gift bag was perfect! (I specifically remember that it came from my friend Amber for my bridal shower… I loved it that much. Sure don’t remember what she gave me IN it though!)

So we considered the colors in the paisley design, and loved the sea-foamy green color. We found the perfect match by way of Krylon! The color is Satin Jade. And it’s amazing.

We then carefully cut our gift bag to size and applied it with our decoupage, and used a razor blade to make the edges crisp and perfect!

I love the way this piece is now FULL of personality and provides a pop of color with a hint of vintage.

I find it to be adorable.

Christine, is like clear goopy stuff that you use to apply paper or fabric permanently to a hard surface. It dries rock hard and is waterproof and very durable! My bottle of it is really old and I can’t remember where I got it, but any craft store for sure. And maybe even Walmart. 🙂
