Let’s change the subject

July 18, 2011 by Bethany Sy

The girls are doing great! We just continue to wait for them to pack on the pounds. So in the interest of my sanity, and before the walls of this hospital envelop my being, let’s talk about crafty beautiful things together. Are you game?

I’ve had lots of down time, while the girls are sleeping, to peruse the internet and find fun creative ideas. People can be so crafty!

This first project I found at Kara Paslay Designs. She did an awesome tutorial for how to make this Woven Veneer Pendant that’s similar to a West Elm lamp, which as you can imagine, is likely very pricey! She just used an old lamp shade, some wire, and an old scrap of linoleum with a “faux wood” look.  Find the full tutorial HERE!

This next little project I couldn’t find the source for, and therefore it is without a tutorial… but it looks pretty self explanatory. It’s this awesome coat rack! AND, you could just about find everything you need to make it right in your own yard! I love how rustic yet artsy it is. This baby is on my honey-do list, only using birch branches!

This next one I have every intention of trying in the nursery to put on this long shelf. DIY Crayon Monograms!! A for Adelyn and P for Paisley! I think it’s absolutely adorable! And you have the option of using only colors that coordinate with your nursery or child’s bedroom. I’m going to stick with rustic yellows, obnoxious turquoise, and various shades of pink! I found this little craft on Chic and Cheap Nursery, and the full tutorial is found HERE!

I’m a sucker for creative and unique pendant lighting, so here’s another one… get this: Plastic Cup Pendant! That’s right! Like the kind you use when you’re camping and write your name on with a Sharpie! I found this project at A Bit of Green with the full tutoiral found HERE!

I believe this next one is actually available at the Pottery Barn, but this would be SO easy to make on your own and customize with your own fabrics. I don’t care much for the pinks, but I would totally use some of my grandma’s vintage fabrics, or find some funky bold prints and geometric patters. All you need are some picture frames, fabric, ribbon, and a bar to hold them on (optional). I would love to do something like this in our office/craft room someday when we get around to doing something with it. With newborn twins, that may be a LONG time.  🙂 But I love little ways to organize and keep mail, receipts, or even scrapbooking paper, pictures and supplies! Fun! And beautiful.

That’s all for today! I just wanted to share some things that have been inspiring me creatively these days. From now on I’ll be productive in different (more important) ways than my usual crafting or building and painting with the hubby in the garage. So I get a real kick out of snooping/stalking other’s great ideas. Have you found a great tutorial or project that you’re dying to try? Please share! I thrive on this stuff!

Regarding the lamp craft – I made this as a child with my mom… a little differently. If you want some color try this – we used Styrofoam cups and traced a zillion of the wide ends on whatever color tissue paper we wanted (I used pink). We cut them ALL out (yeah I know), and then ran a rim of glue around the cup and stuck it to the paper. After drying, assemble with your staples (we used paperclips), and you have essentially the same lamp but with a pop of color lighting!

My first comment- been following you since spring when I was looking at backsplash ideas (went ahead with real slate). I am also on an Iowa acreage with two girls (now 9 and 12).

I am a Crayola freak (I collect) so the crayon one is a must-do. I am also going to try the fabric/frame over the desk thing- today we are repurposing orange crates into a desk for my 9 year old. Originally, my mom made them into a bookcase when I was about that age. Finally, I showed the branch coat hanger to my husband…we’ll see. If we weren’t eternally picking up branches to burn, we would have enough to pick from.
