So we’ve been in the throes of updating our master bedroom for awhile now. One half of the room looks like this:
We love how things are turning out… BUT (dun dun dun), we’re at a bit of a stand-still whilst we patiently wait for the perfect long/low dresser on craigslist, and possibly some seating. So the other half STILL looks like this:
Yikes right? And that “mystery project” that I’ve been working on with my sewing machine? You know, the one that I want to douse with gasoline and start it ablaze? Well you’re not going to see it today. Or quite possible ever. I’ve been attempting to make a duvet cover for the master bed, and I. HATE. IT. I’ve spent countless hours on that thing, and I’m only about half done. It’s not turning out how I wanted it. It doesn’t look like how I pictured it. And I’m not sure if I’m going to finish it, or just chalk this one up as a complete and utter design fail.
And no, I don’t want to talk about it.
But this past weekend, Nick knew just the thing to help pull me out of my pouting funk. He knew I’d been dreaming of putting up some board and batten in the living room. A little something like this that I pinned awhile back.
Pretty right? It feels weird starting on a new room when we’re not finished with the bedroom, but I get a little restless when we have to wait around for the perfect deal on craigslist. And there’s no sense in wasting time when we could be having some fun in the living room!
So we loaded up the sistas and voyaged to the city to gather supplies. All we really needed was a bunch of 1×4’s. (we took a short detour to stop at Urgent Care so we could confirm that Paisley indeed has a double ear infection, poor babe!) Here’s the living room in all it’s boringness. Warning… old photo. Our Christmas tree is not still up.
We (Nick!) got busy cutting the boards to size and routing the edges to be all pretty-like. He takes my ideas, runs with them, and almost always makes them undeniably better! (this can be a blessing and a curse, because sometimes I just want a simple something-or-other, and he decides to build the Taj Mahal) (oh yeah, and then he blames me for afflicting him with such expensive time-consuming projects, when all I wanted was a simple little something-or-other) (bitter? NOOOOOOooo). He’s a lovely boy.
It went up on the wall likity-split YO!
Adelyn and I provided support, mostly by taking pictures.
Can you picture it?
I hope so, because this is all the further we’ve gotten. Today while the girls are napping/frolicking about, I’ll be wood puttying all the screws and cracks and sanding it smooth. Then tonight after the girls are in bed (behind closed doors to protect them from the fumes) we’ll prime and paint white! Oh yeah, and we’re going to add some crown moulding to the top, which will make for a handy little shelf! Can’t wait!

We are trying to work on a project like this for our nursery but aren’t super knowledgable about this sort of thing. How did you stick the boards on the wall- I see you all used screws but did you use anchors for the drywall, etc? Thanks!
Nick says
Nicole,
We did not use anchors. we screwed them straight into the drywall trying to land as many as possible into a stud. Short of trying to pry them off with a pry bar, they are secure.

We just did board and batten in our bathroom–love it! Yours is going to be great. My hubby is the same way..I don’t dare think out loud till I’m sure what I really want because he’s on it in a flash, and like Nick, usually making it more than I imagined! But I’ll take that over unfinished projects any day! Good luck with the bedroom!

That is going to be beautiful! What a great idea to add more character to your living room. Can I borrower Nic for a while? I promise I will feed him really well…..

Love that headboard and your board and batten, I wish my fiance had half the motivation of your hubby! We have a whole 1850s house to remodel. My goal is 3 years, but we’ll see:)
