A much-needed porch refresh

August 17, 2024 by Bethany Sy

We have focused so much on the interior of our house the past few years, we’ve completely neglected this crusty porch situation. The cracked, peeling paint is the first thing people see when they come to our house… and not only is it nasty, it’s also such a weird pink color. Why? WHY?

*This post is sponsored by our friends at Dutch Boy® Paints. Thank you for supporting the fabulous brands that make Reality Daydream possible!*

Just look at this crusty old paint:

Because the existing paint job is flaking off and unstable, we can’t just paint over it and expect it to be durable and long-lasting. No matter how high-quality the paint you’re using, prepping surfaces is just as important!

In this case I cleared everything off the porch and power washed. This was time consuming because more and more and MORE paint flakes continued flying off. But finally I got it to a point where all the paint that was left was firm and stable.

After rinsing off all the paint flakes and letting the porch dry, we’re ready for paint! I’m using Dutch Boy® Paints’ Porch and Floor paint in the color Worn Greige

that I snagged at Menards. It feels like the perfect neutral for this porch, and vibes nicely with the nearby concrete. And even if it ends up not being the perfect color, I always remind myself it’s only paint!

The Twist and Pour spout is so handy, and honestly, BRILIANT. I started out by cutting in around the entire perimeter of the porch with a paint brush. Then came back in with the roller and filled it in. I was so pleasantly surprised by how smooth it went on and how fabulous the coverage is!

This Porch and Floor Paint works on both concrete and wood. And I love that it prevents dirt pickup and resists mildew… but most importantly, it protects against cracking, peeling, scuffing, fading, and weathering. All things we definitely need!

I decided to do 3 coats, for maximum durability. And I’m so happy with how it turned out!

This whole space is so much brighter and happier! You’d never know how tragic it looked just yesterday. 🙂
