Twin Twilight Zone

November 23, 2011 by Bethany Sy

Having twins isn’t as obscure as it used to be (although we still somehow get mauled at walmart every time), and everyone wants to tell you that they too know someone that has twins!!!  “Awwww, twins? My neighbor’s step-daughter’s god-child has twins!” It’s like they want you to be super excited that you have this awesome thing in common with their neighbor’s step-daughter’s god-child. And it’s true… everyone knows someone that has twins. And when you have twins yourself, other twins start coming out of the woodwork!I have several friends that have twins, and another friend that just birthed herself a set of twins on Monday (congrats Holly!). And yet, every time I meet another twin mamma, there’s some sort of kindred spirit we both feel. It’s like we KNOW each other. We understand each others’ struggles.

Anywho, yesterday my dad flew back from China (YAAAAY!) and we went out to Famous Dave’s for a little dinner and convo. After we all finished eating, I took the girls one at a time to the restroom to change their diapers before we headed back home. And whilst I had Baby #1 on that nasty germ-infested plastic changing table thingy that folds down from the wall (I put my own little portable plastic changing pad on top of it, and made sure she didn’t touch ANYTHING). This lady comes out of one of the stalls with her little toddler, they wash hands and leave the bathroom. THEN, 5 minutes later, I was repeating my diaper changing ritual with Baby #2, and the same exact lady came out of the stall with a little toddler. I was like… dejavu? Am I losing my mind? Baby #2 was crying pretty loud, and I smiled at the lady and apologized for all the noise.

The lady says, I understand… I have twins too! And the dejavu made sense!

At that very moment a second lady who was elderly was coming out of the other stall, and her mouth fell open when she heard our conversation. She says… “I HAVE TWINS TOO!”

Say WHAAAA? Come again?

We just all three stood there in shock for a second. Three women in a tiny restaurant bathroom, ALL THREE mommies of twins? Cah-RAZy!

We each took turns saying how old our twins are, whether they’re fraternal or identical, and what their names are. Mine 4 months, the second lady’s twins were 3 years old, and the third lady’s twins were 46 years old! Yowza.

It was such a weird and awesome experience!!

I have 26 yo boys and 21 yo boy & girl! Doc thought that the boys were identical, but one has long legs/arms and the other has short legs/arms and a long body. So I think they are both fraternal, altho they are all obviously siblings. I didn’t have the issues you did, quite the reverse, in fact. And no history of twins in my family. Dad’s on the other hand…which makes it rough on the daughter. A twin with a family history of twins.
