Thumb Color

January 12, 2011 by Bethany Sy

Until very recently, THIS is the only plant I have in my entire house (thanks Diane!). But this little cactus’ health has been steadily failing. How do you kill a cactus?

So my mother took it upon herself to gift me several of her house plants. This is good for two reasons.
1) House plants bring a home to life and look so fresh and stylish!
2) I desperately need to learn a thing or two about how to care for plants. I have so little experience, I don’t even KNOW if I have a black thumb or not.

This lovely mystery plant has grown about 20 inches in the last two weeks. It started off as a little stub of green in a mason jar of rocks (??) and look at her now!! We’re loving these little blossoms, and they’re VERY fragrant. Almost too fragrant for my weak pregnant stomach. Momma informed me it’s a Paper White Narcissus.

Obviously, this is an Aloe plant… who doesn’t love Aloe? And super easy to care for too!

Ok, this pot is to die for. I don’t know where she got it, but it’s so incredibly adorable. And the plant within is some sort of Lilly as far as I can tell.

And finally, this little colorful bugger is one of my favorites! So perky and bright!

I’m loving the new fresh vibe in my home, and hope that things work out between me and the plants. Ok honestly, Nick has been watering them… not that I asked him to. He just enjoys it. And I enjoy watching. And it’s a good way for me to learn, right?

Do any of you have a serious lack of knowledge regarding greenery? Or a knack for killing the foliage in your home? Let’s hear about it.

It’s hard to believe that you’ve had one plant in your house at one time. for all you guys wondering, we have around a hundred. My mom has learned a lot I gues..

Crotons are really hard to keep alive. Good luck. The others are pretty easy- you should be fine!

My advice is to put them some place sunny, water them once a week and the rest of the time, ignore them! That’s what works for me and I three of the four plants you inherited!

I probably shouldn’t be posting because you asked if we had a lack of knowledge… well I went to ISU for horticulture and used to work in greenhouses/nursery so I thought I’d try to give you a little insight. You are right – it is a peace lily! These plants are tough and soon you should have a white bloom coming up! Honestly my mom always waits for hers to droop a little and then water it so she knows she isn’t over watering. Over watering is most people’s #1 problem! We waited for most plants in the greenhouse to get dry or even droop before watering them – you’ll be less likely to kill them this way 🙂 The last plant was a Croton – a wonderful tropical plant! Depending on how much light/shade it gets it will get more or less colorful!

Enjoy your plants – they are my therapy 🙂 I still kill house plants from time to time though – it’s the outdoor plants that I really love. Can’t wait for spring!

Aqua globes have really helped me.. and theyre pretty too. They sell them pretty much any where now!

I find orchids are really easy as well, if you want to give that a try 🙂
