Sloppy!

January 5, 2012 by Bethany Sy

Well, I was going to post earlier this morning, but I didn’t realize it would take 5 hours to upload my video to YouTube. NICE.

With new beginnings in mind, we decided it was high time to let the girls try out some baby food! Our Dr gave us permission to start at 4 months, but with the girls being 5 weeks premature, I didn’t feel comfortable pulling the trigger until they were closer to 6 months. This decision was partly for their developmental well-being, and partly for my well-being… because this milestone seems to mark a point where they’re no longer little babies anymore. And that idea causes me a certain degree of distress.

But with the girls drinking a combined 72 ounces of formula each day (!!!), I figured it was high time they start having a little grain tucked in there. So on New Year’s Day, Nick and I got ourselves all prepped… everything short of putting on raincoats and covering the room with plastic (think Dexter). We even remembered to record it! (sorry about the video quality at the beginning)

Funny how you don’t realize your annoying baby-voice until you hear yourself on video. As you can see… Paisley needs to be put in a straight-jacket to keep her hands and bib out of her mouth. But since that day, she’s really taken to the cereal and can’t get enough! Our girl Dell, on the other hand, reacts this same exact way. She makes and icky face and spits it out every time. Does this mean she just isn’t ready? Or should I keep trying each day until she gets used to it? So many questions! It’s such a fun new stage though.

My daughter would spit out cereal the first few tries. She eventually got used to it and like it. I think it was a texture issue, because we tried Peas yesterday (first food other than cereal) and she did the same thing.

They are so cute. Once they start food there is no looking back. Next you know they will be in Kindergarten! 🙂 They will definetly let you know when they are ready to start. My daughter was also 5 weeks premature and we tried at 5 months but she just wasn’t ready so we waited till closer to 6.5 months and she took right off. The trick that worked in the beginning for us was the more watery or closer to the consistency of breastmilk/formula the better they do in the beginning. Then you can slowly start thickening it up. Good luck. Enjoy the messy fun feeding times and the funny faces. jillymarie08@hotmail.com

Boy, did that bring back memories. Neither of my girls would eat rice. We went straight to applesauce and sweet potatoes. In fact, my second daughter ate so many sweet potatoes she had a orange nose for a while! Hang in there, there is no right or wrong combination. It is what the kiddos like and tolerate we11!

Our littles never liked cereal and refused to eat it too. After a few weeks of trying with our oldest, we gave up and switched to fruit and peas. Our younger was just as stubborn so we went to fruit and veggies (apples/bananas/and her fav, carrots) after just a few tries. We tried mixing the cereal with juice or with fruit as others suggested, but that didn’t work either. I think it was the texture they were opposed to. I would say try another type of cereal and then a couple of fruits over the next couple of weeks to see if she gets into something else, and if she’s still not interested then she really might not be there yet and you could give her a couple of weeks off and then try again. Good luck. It’s definitely an adventure, but a fun one for sure. 🙂 Congrats on your fun new milestone! The pics are just adorable!

That was adorable. They have the best facial expressions ever.

I remember those kind of bibs from when I was younger.

My Mom used to make bibs like that for people. She passed away before I knew I wanted to learn how. LOVE IT!! 🙂

My two kiddos did the same thing with their first experiences with rice cereal. I just assumed it was because they were use to the texture/consistency of their milk/formula and the rice cereal texture was new and different. I was always told to do one new fruit/vegetable at a time from my pediatricians in Iowa and SD.

Ditto the apples and rice cereal. My son will have nothing to do with plain rice cereal, so I mix it in with baby food. At first I would still add the recommend amount of liquid plus baby food, but now I add it in the food to thicken it.

I love it! I wouldn’t take it as Adelyn not being ready though, you may just need to experiment a little to see what she likes. My daughter wasn’t a fan of rice cereal, but would chow down on oatmeal. You can also vary what you mix the cereal with – instead of water or formula try pureed fruits/veggies. Mine was a huge fan of the fruit/grain combo. Apples are good for early eaters. Good luck!!

So cute! I’d recommend trying something like sweet potato or banana instead of rice cereal. Much better flavor and nutritional value!
