Pure Mischief

March 23, 2012 by Bethany Sy

We’re at the point now where it seems there are new milestones all the time! Adelyn popped a 3rd tooth (and may be working on a 4th) this week and has started saying DAH! Nick thinks she’s conveying who her favorite parent is, but I gently explain to him that it’s phonetically the easiest things for babies to say first …Hehe! Paisley is on the verge of scooting/crawling. This mobility has brought with it the need for us to use of the word ‘NO’. And I think she knows what it means already! She absolutely LOVES cords of any kind… but she especially loves the cord to my laptop (likely because it’s always out!). But she knows it’s off limits, so she looks at me out of the corner of her eye and slowly moves her hand closer and closer… waiting for the ‘NO’ followed by redirection. Girlfriend is testing us already! Adelyn is just a sweet snuggly thing that would rather play quietly with a toy or cuddle with mommy or daddy. She could roll across the room if she wanted to… but she doesn’t want to. Paisley is more ‘spirited ‘ at the moment (they go through phases of switching personalities!) and her favorite pastime is taking things away from Dell. It’s starting already!!!

We’ve come to a fork in the road with regards to the tandem-crib-sleeping sitch. They nap separately during the day downstairs (in pack-and-plays), but we still have them sharing the crib at night. Miraculously, until recently, the girls fall asleep almost immediately and wake up 12 hours later in the same place we left them. But the last few nights, there’s been some mischief and foolery happening before the drifting off to sleep action. Listening to these shenanigans on the baby monitor makes me have two very different feelings. 1) awwwwwww, how cute that they’re playing and loving each other! 2) those crazies need to go to sleep. And since Paisley is the more aggressive baby, I find myself worrying about kicking/scratching and other playful injuries. Or just simply worrying that they’re preventing each other from sleeping. We only have one crib, and no room in the nursery for a second crib. Nick seems to think that they’ll adapt as they grow and we don’t need to change anything until they’re ready to move to toddler beds. But I don’t know. Any twin mommies that kept their twins in the same crib past 9 months?

I don’t remember at what age we separated Abby and Emma I just know it was when one rolled over on the other. We put our cribs end to end touching so they could still touch each other and interact with one another.

My girls slept in the same crib until almost 2 when they began climbing out and went into a full size bed.

My girls stayed in the same crib until Katie started pushing Carrie between the rails. Your girls will let you know when they are ready to separate. We positioned two cribs on the same wall with a small space between them. They could still see and interact with each other but had their own space. Btw they shared a room all the way through high school.

I have no good advice 🙂 but the one about two cribs side by side or two pack n plays side by side sounds good if they keep each other up! I wanna know if Adelyn is actually longer than Paisley by that much or if she’s just sitting different cuz in the pic she looks way longer.

I had a friend who still had her twin girls int he same crib at 2 years old. As I remember they did play together now and then, but they didn’t fight or hurt each other and it didn’t prevent them from going to sleep in the end so they just stuck with it until toddler beds. I’m sure it really depends on the babies, but my typical parenting of our kiddos has been a “do what works and what feels right” approach, so if they are still getting enough sleep and are happy to share, I would say let them. 🙂

My twin girls shared a crib until they were about 3 months old. They’re 11 years old now and I can’t remember exactly when we switched them, but it was because I wanted them to sleep without being woken by the other during the night or to prevent the other one from getting to sleep in the first place. I’m impressed that your girls are still able to share a crib! I would think it would be easier to get them used to separate cribs at night now, when they’re still so young, without any problems. Plus, they’re used to sleeping apart during the day. Could you move the pack and plays to their bedroom until you find another full size crib? aRA

Having seen your nursery :), I wonder if you could put two cribs with the head of each crib coming off of the same wall you have the one on? With a small walkway in between? Won’t leave much floor space, but would create important sleep space. We had to do that in a tiny room in my house when my twin grandsons lived with me for about 2 years.

awww! They are so cute! I’m impressed they’ve shared a crib up to now! We had to separate ours at about 5 months old after one night when I woke up to Baby A screaming (mad screaming not hurt screaming) because Baby G had broken out of his swaddle and turned himself so he was kicking Baby A in the head. Boy was Baby A mad. We started sleeping one in a pack n play and one in the crib until we moved to a bigger place that had room for two cribs.
