Our Valentine’s Day

February 15, 2016 by Bethany Sy

Valentine’s day always seemed like such a silly ‘forced’ day of love to me. Why spend $100 for flowers on Valentine’s Day when you can buy the same exact flowers 2 weeks before for $30… AND it means more because it’s unexpected an spontaneous.

RIGHT?

Reality Daydream

I felt that way right up until I met my husband. ON VALENTINE’S DAY. Exactly 8 years ago.

{Reality Daydream}

That’s right, we met on Valentine’s Day… blind-date style. And ever since then, that nauseous ‘love day’ holds some legitimate sentimental meaning for us.

He’s pretty good about planning special dates and making sure I feel loved and respected (even more than normal) each year on Valentine’s Day. And this year, my heart almost exploded when he not only brought me a big bouquet of flowers… but he also got each of the girls flowers and individually asked them to be his Valentine.

Can you legitimately think of anything cuter?

I love that he’s demonstrating his love for them tangibly and is modeling how a good man treats his little ladies.

The twins returned the favor by getting their craft on. They’re always looking for reasons to make homemade cards! They get that from their Grandma Diane. <3

This year, he planned a getaway for us to go snowboarding (including arranging for childcare!). We used to love going snowboarding together in our pre-parenting life, and it was the only thing I would look forward to about wintertime. But it’s been 5 years now since we’ve hit the slopes …if you can call these ‘Iowa mountains’ slopes. #facepalm

But even when I lived in Colorado and used to tear up the big girl mountains, I never got to go snowboarding at night. SO FUN!

As if on cue, it even started snowing and allowed us some ‘fresh powder’ experience… but after while we realized WE BETTER HEAD HOME BEFORE THE ROADS GET TOO BAD! As we were heading out, I proclaimed that I wished we had snagged a stranger to take our picture. In true Nick fashion, he beckoned the closest person at that very moment… which just happened to be pre-teen boy who’s eyes were like that of a deer in headlights. But I’m so glad we asked him, or we wouldn’t have this gem to cherish for the rest of our days.

This is mostly just me documenting our memories right here on my online scrapbook. I don’t want to forget special days like this!

Does Valentine’s Day hold any special significance to you? Did you do anything fun or meaningful to speak of? Do you have any special traditions that you do with your kids or your significant other? Or do you despise Valentine’s Day? (that’s ok too!)

How sweet! My dad would always leave my sister and I a card and a little present (candy bar, a small toy, etc). We loved it!

Side note: I see your lovely bouquet contains Lilies. Lilies are toxic to cats and cause kidney failure so please make sure the kitties cannot get anywhere near them!

In Brazil, valentine’s day is on June 12th, but people are starting to comment and hear in the media about how it’s “valentine’s day in the rest of the world” on February 14th.
Reading your post I was thinking about how it’s also been 8 years since I went on the first date with my now husband, but we just got married a few months ago, because we were really young when we started dating (I was 19, nd he was 20!).

I met my husband in April, so we had missed Valentine’s Day that year. But, when it rolled around the next year, can you imagine his surprise when I told him to please NOT spend a fortune on what I considered to be a Hallmark Day. I can still hear the surprise in his voice (we were on the phone) when he replied, “really????” I told him I saw no reason to spend $80 (haha–long time ago) for flowers that were $20 a couple of days before or after the 14th of February. I told him that I thought people should spread love throughout the year, not just on the day that Hallmark had deemed “the one day of the year.” (Little did I know at the time that that conversation pretty much put the icing on the cake for him to want to marry me) I am most surprised by flowers any other day of the year…..the same goes for random gifts & cards. We’ve been together 13 years, and yesterday we exchanged cards…ok, so we gave Hallmark a little bit of our money. Then we headed out for a bit of house-hunting…sans the realtor. She was home “celebrating” Valentine’s Day with her hubby of 26 years.
