Living Room Manipulation

June 22, 2011 by Bethany Sy

So last weekend, we did a little impromptu rearranging of the living room. It was functional the way it was, but there’s just something fun about rearranging that makes you feel like you have a whole new room! I’ve been hating on the living room for awhile, hating how undecorated and unfinished it is… so this made me feel less hostile.

First, we moved the sectional and coffee table to the opposite corner of the room. It hadn’t occurred to me that this beastly piece of furniture could go anywhere else, but despite the windows… I think it totally works.

Couch update: It looks AWESOME and vintage… but is legitimately uncomfortable to relax on. It’s just not the kind of couch that you want to curl up and watch a movie on. BUT it’s quite possibly the only couch (let alone sectional) that will ever fit up the stairs into our massive finished attic. Then we’ll put a big fluffy (kid-friendly) couch set or sectional in it’s place in the living room! And maybe then, I’ll hang some curtains, paint the walls, and do my thing. That’s the long term plan.

Rug update: the painted rug is holding strong. It is showing some wear in one spot where we sit in front of the computer, but that was expected. We still love the design and the visual effect it brings into our drab living space.

So the other side of the room (where the sectional once was) looks like this now.

It works for now. Having the TV on this side of the room causes some major glare from the windows, making it difficult to enjoy watching movies… but now that it’s summer, we barely watch any TV at all. Win win!

Did you notice the sweet new corner shelf?

My mom likely pulled it from a dumpster or some-such madness, and I was quick to claim it. I adore the chicken wire, and a fresh coat of white paint gave it the perfect combo of rustic and chic!

So I have a confession… the true reason we rearranged the living room is to accommodate: THE DAYBED.

Did you just drop to your knees laughing at my pathetic pregnancy laziness?

1) that’s not very nice
2) yet well deserved

But the truth is, both couches really start to hurt my back after about 30 minutes. At which point I go upstairs to lay in bed for an hour or so (the first half hour is just to recover from walking up the stairs) leaving Nick in the living room alone and bored. And me alone and bored in bed.

My favorite part is the lovely floral and brass. JK JK

The whole daybed would get a good paint job and some fluffy throw pillows if it was going to stick around… but alas, it’s time in the living room is very limited. The girls will make their entrance into the world SOON!

In all honesty, my life has improved dramatically. It may seem like a simple thing to you, but this daybed is a lifesaver for me, and will make the next 4 weeks far more enjoyable.

Take that.

I think that I had that EXACT daybed growing up!!! The floral pattern is dead on – but with 3 girls sharing a room – the day bed was a roomy option.

Nice change with the room. Refreshing, isn’t it?! I love rearranging furniture, assuming the furniture is capable of occupying the space in a different layout.

Hang in there… Do you have 4 weeks at best? Are you hoping for at least 4 more weeks?
