Nursery: The chair situation

March 30, 2011 by Bethany Sy

My most recent cry for help brought MANY blog stalkers out of hiding… giving an amateur like me priceless helpful advice that will not only save us $$$, but also likely keep me on the sane side of new motherhood in those crazy first months with the ladies. One major thing that I had been wondering about was a rocking chair. In hopes of tandem-breastfeeding, I know I’ll be spending a LOT of time sitting/rocking/nursing. And since my tush is boney already (though inexplicably UN-perky) I want to be as comfortable as possible. A couple of varsity mom’s suggested bypassing the trendy glider (and certainly grandma’s precious wooden rocker), and instead splurging on a serious LazyBoy rocking recliner. Yes please?

But it sounded spendy… and not very nursery-cute. But when I have two screaming babies and haven’t brushed my teeth in 5 days, things like the aesthetics of the nursery will no longer be on the forefront of my mind. And since we’re doing this nursery on a tight budget, I made it my personal goal to pursue a serious relationship with craigslist until I found something with the following criteria:

  • comfortable LazyBoy-esque chair
  • not only rocks but also reclines for those late night feedings
  • preferably fits into our nursery vision/color scheme
  • from a non-smoking AND pet-free home
  • must be under $50 (that’s right)

And I was willing to be patient for the long haul. Being familiar with craigslist, I knew that I would need to check regularly, because the good deals go fast. And when the right thing comes along… it WILL be mine.

And it DID come along!

An adorable elderly couple was moving from their smoke-free-pet-free home (check) to a retirement community and selling many of their well-loved, well-taken-care-of pieces of history/furniture. And among those items was not one but TWO actual name brand LazyBoy reclining rockers (check check). Though purchased many years ago, (before LazyBoy started manufacturing huge, beefy man-chairs that belong in a dimly-lit cigarette-smelling man-cave), are in remarkably great condition. They used them as ‘his and hers’ chairs (how incredibly adorable), and allow us the choice between white and black (check) for our nursery !! Of course the ad included both chairs, so we’ll have one for the living room as well… because lord knows I’ll be rocking these girls on every level of our house.

These chairs became our possessions for the low price of $50… for BOTH of them. (CHECK!)

We put the black one in the nursery, because it’s in slightly better condition… and it fits our overall vision for our babies’ bedroom.

In addition to craigslist steals, we also hope to incorporate a TON of items that have sentimental value, displaying handmade treasures of heritage and heirlooms, blending modern with vintage. This room is going to be meaningful to our little ladies!! This pillow was quilted by my grandmother to match a huge beautiful butterfly quilt she made. I’ve had it since I was a little girl! And it fits perfectly into the color-scheme!

More to come! Stay tuned!!!

As a veteran Mom of 6, having spent many a day and night sleeping, rocking, nursing, reading and snuggling little ones in just such a La-Z-Boy chair, let me just tell you, you made the right choice! Wooden rockers and trendy gliders are cute, but when you can’t help falling asleep in an upright position in the middle of the night, you worry that your baby will roll off your lap and onto the floor. On those nights, you will be much more rested and relaxed sleeping in the La-Z-Boy with baby safely asleep on your chest, both of you wrapped in a cozy quilt. Way to go, new Mom!

Those look like the chair I have in my nursery.. but mine is red. It was kept in a dark basement for its early life, so the chair kept its colour and condition well. Very comfy.
