19 Months

February 8, 2013 by Bethany Sy

The girls have been… HYPER, lately. I wish we could harness their energy and use it to reduce our electric bill.

While they’re very enthusiastic little varmints, they sure don’t talk that much. They can only say a handful of words, and they’re those words that only a parent can translate. As twins, it seems almost everything about them is polar opposite, but ironically… their speech is a spot-on mirror-image of each other. They say the exact same 7 (ish) words. As follows:

  • ‘mah’ = milk
  • ‘whoa-wah’ = whoa
  • ‘key’ = blankie
  • ‘key’ = icky
  • ‘key’= binkie
  • ‘key’ = kitty
  • ‘poo’ = I have a present for you in my diaper

I know their language is behind, but they’re still in the ‘normal’ range… especially for twins. So I’m not sweating it. Their daddy didn’t talk until he was four, and he sure doesn’t have any problems now!

Oh! And at their 18 month appointment, they weighed the EXACT same… (25 lbs 7 oz). Which is crazy since they’re built so differently. Adelyn is very tall and small-boned, and Paisley is solid and not as tall (though not short either). They’re SO different!

PAISLEY AND DELLA

Dear Paisley,

You are enthusiastically curious about everything. While you can’t say the actual words, you know what EVERYTHING is called. You like to be the center of attention and love to perform, like your pops. Your favorite animal in your books is the goat, and when you try to make a goat sound… you get all red and stiff and sound like you’re trying to push out a big one. You are fascinated with my tongue, and want me to stick it out all the time so you can touch it. And when you do, you shiver and say Icky! You’re happy almost all the time, but do hold first place for your tantrum-throwing efforts. They are very occasional, but when they do happen, they’re intense… and you get ignored! You are completely potty trained (except for sleep time) and haven’t had an accident since day-2 of potty-training! You don’t need to be reminded; you just grab your crotch and say ‘Pah Pah’ when you have to go. You even poop on the toilet like it’s your J.O.B. I’m aware of what an unusual blessing this is, and I’m SO thankful that you’re such a smart little rascal. I hope you teach Delly your new skill so I don’t have to. You’re such a sweet girl; and while you may look like me, I think you have daddy’s spirit for sure. We love you times a million!

Dear Adelyn,

You’ve turned into such a nurturing and loving little gal. You love to take care of your sissy and bring her things you think she might want. You tend to sit back and soak in information, without being in the lime-light. You’re more animated when your sister is sleeping, which I find very curious. It makes me wonder if your true personality comes out when you’re not being overshadowed by your wild sis. I wish I knew how to help your personality flourish when you are together. Your favorite pastime is pushing or dragging objects (like a laundry basket, dining chair, or toys) through the house. Sometimes you even like to give your blankie a ride. We often find you quietly sitting on the heat register when the furnace is running. You love to dance as soon as you hear music or rhythm of any kind, including daddy’s beat-boxing efforts. You enjoy looking out the window at Reuben and the kitties. You love to give kisses and hugs, but also find enjoyment in testing your limits. You give a fierce death-glare when you’re told ‘NO’ that will bring a grown man to his knees. You only eat vegetables if they’re on the end of a fork, but don’t have any requirements when it comes to carbs. You’re so independent, and I see myself in you everyday. We love you times a million!

    So stinkin’ cute!

Macy and Peyton are 13.5 months now and have many words like your girls. Peyton says most of the words, but Macy is ALWAYS babbbling. Their comprehension baffles me. They know what everything is called as well. Such smarties, our babies are, huh Beth?! Here are the words Macy and Peyton know:

    Dada – Daddy, obviously
DA! – That (when pointing to anything)
    Bah – Ball
    Baah – Bath
    Ba – Book
    Mmmt – Eat
    Baba – bottle/cup/milk
Mama (only when crying, they won’t say it any
    other time! So frustrating!)
BahBop – this is Peyton’s word for Grandma

They also say some “sssss”, but they are not consistent and it doesn’t mean anything in particular yet. And of course, they LOVE to “oof oof” when they see ANY animal, dog or not! Haha! They love puppies to no end. Oh, and there’s the ever-present yell/scream just to be making noise. Haha!

What a sweet, wonderful and honestly funny post! Your daughters are beautiful and your letters are such a great idea for their baby books. Your post reminds me of when all three of my girls were little. Enjoy them every day – I can tell that you are! It’s amazing how fast they grow up…mine are now 23, 19 and 12. Ahhhhh…time has flown. Hug and squeeze them as often as you can! And enjoy those baby giggles – they are the best!

So adorable! My little guy is 18 months and not talking very much either at this point. He’s my 4th and the slowest verbal developer by far. They all move at their own pace.

My GGD is 21 mths and my GD is 30 mths. Both use sign language for those common items like milk, more food and other standard items. My GGD receives speech therapy via Birth to 3 Program. No one could understand a word she said. I’m not saying your girls need assistance but if you’re interested I’m sure where you live has similar programs. I love reading about your twins, they are so adorable. I especially love your letters to each of the girls. They are truly a special pair of sisters.
