14 Months

September 7, 2012 by Bethany Sy

Once upon a time, I took over a hundred pics of my tiny babies in one ‘orange chair’ sitting, because they were just that stinkin’ cute and… sat still.

Times have changed my friends. I’m totally spent. I just took well over a hundred pictures again, only in almost every shot, they’re like a pack of wild rabid coyotes. I uploaded some of our ‘outtakes’ to Flickr so you can all go take a gander at the crazies in action. Click here for that. Comment on your favorite… I did! Or better yet, add a caption! This could be fun! While you’re doing that, you can find me sitting on the kitchen floor with a strong drink in hand… I joke!

Here’s the best I could do. Paisley HAS a neck, I promise.

Dear Adelyn,

This last month, you’ve become stronger and more steady. We encourage you to take steps, but you prefer to do things when it’s YOUR idea, just like your daddy. You are very independent, and love to play by yourself and explore. When I open the gate, you drop what you’re doing and make a break for it. Your hair has finally started to grow, and we’re surprised that it’s coming in blonde. Your eyes are so dark, we thought for sure you’d be a brunette. Only occasionally, you get in a silly mood and make all kinds of hilarious faces, but for the most part, you’re pretty melancholy and serious. You’ve taken a liking to your crocheted blanket and drag it everywhere with you. It’s a borderline obsession. You’re an early riser, and are very snuggly in the mornings. I love this time I get to cuddle my otherwise independent baby. You love to point at strangers, and they seem to get a kick out of it. You don’t like having your diaper changed, and we have to pin you down to get ‘er done. You love all types of carbs… (just like mommy), but are generally a picky eater. You’ve slimmed down a lot in the last month, but I can still sink my face into those cheeks, and that’s all that matters. You’re teething pretty much all the time. I know this, because every time I look in your mouth, it seems like you have a new tooth. You came down with a weird full-body rash this week. The nurse thought it was Roseola, but it only lasted a day, so I think it was an allergic reaction… to something. You’re an extremely chill and laid-back baby. Sometimes I wonder what you’re thinking, because you’re eyes are so deep and thoughtful. You love to have books read to you, and you pay close attention to each page. You still love to play catch with a ball, and your aim is impeccable. You’re able to say the words: ‘Book’ and ‘Ball’… your two favorite things. I love watching you grow and learn, and can’t wait to see what the next month brings!

Dear Paisley,

You’re a crazy girl. I wish I could have a small fraction of your energy. You’ve recently started walking, almost exclusively… and you’re SO proud of yourself! You’re very wobbly and it’s super fun to watch you. You hold your arms out in front of you and sway and stumble back and forth. You look like a zombie! You’re a people pleaser, and love to help out. When sissy is crying, you go pat her on the back and hand her her paci. On the other hand, when sissy is trying to go to sleep at night, you love to take her paci and throw it out of the crib and laugh hysterically while she cries. We’re working on this, aren’t we? You love to eat, and will eat basically anything… in large quantities. You still fill your mouth to capacity, and occasionally choke. We have to watch you very carefully! You pick up sign language quickly, and specifically love to sign ‘Eat’, ‘More’, and ‘Milk’, and you cry when I  sign ‘All done’. You suck your thumb when you’re tired or nervous, and it still takes awhile for you to warm up to anyone but mommy and daddy. But once you’re comfortable, you’re the life of the party. You love to imitate and mimic everything, and you love the reaction you get when you do so. You’re far less independent than sissy, and prefer to be on or around me at all times. You freak out when I leave the room to go to the bathroom or do anything. Just like sissy, you love to be read to, but your attention span is very short. When I’m halfway through one book, you shove another book in my face. The 3 of us read pretty much all day. You want to be held and cry like it hurts every time you poop. You’re starting to enjoy bath time a little more, and love to try and grab the water coming out the faucet. You point and say ‘Bah’ at everything, with a very concerned look on your face. You prefer the radio to be off in the car so you can sing quietly to yourself. I love watching you grow and learn, and can’t wait to see what the next month brings!

As the mother of an eighteen year old that is leaving me to go college in a few months (yes, it’s all about me), I adore that you are doing this for your children. What a precious gift this will be not only for them but for you too. I stumbled on this page from Pinterest and I am super glad I idid. 🙂

Just wanted to say awesome job teaching the girls to sign! My husband and I are volunteers in our deaf community and have met so many that have taught their children sign language to help alleviate the frustration of the early years. Its a wonderful tool, and a beautiful language. Keep it up!
