44 weeks!

May 11, 2012 by Bethany Sy

In the last week or so, Paisley has had some exciting milestones to share! It took her 10 months, but she finally got her very first tooth! (Adelyn beat her on that one, getting her first tooth a couple months ago. And now she has 3!) Additionally, Paisley has started pulling herself up on furniture! She hasn’t started cruising along the edge yet, but she definitely gets up to a standing position… which gives her access to a whole new world!

I have conflicting feelings about the girls’ varying developmental skills. I know that all babies progress at different paces, but having twins… it’s so hard not to compare them and worry that one might be a little behind. Adelyn is far more verbally developed and jabbers mama, dada, baba, juju, etc. Yet she seems happy to sit and play without any desire to crawl, let alone pull herself up on furniture. And Paisley may be more physically developed, but she doesn’t talk at all. She screeches and grunts… but that’s about it!

I’ve hear that sometimes with twins, one will be more verbal and one will excel more physically. And I’m sure it has nothing to do with their long term abilities or skills. I’m just being a paranoid mama! They’re both such sweet loving girls, with wildly different personalities. I love them soooooooooooo much!
Happy weekend my friends!

Each child is so different. My oldest (almost 3) was born at 36 and walked at 10 months and was scaling ladders and jungle gyms at 15 months. However, (being a teacher) I was freaked out that he wasn’t talking a whole lot. This did eventually came between 2 and 2.5 years and now he saying crazy words like diplodicus, pteranadon (dinosaur names) and speaking in sentences. If you are concerned write them down and asked the girls’ doctor at their next appointment. It’s hard to believe the girls will almost be 1! Happy belated 1st mother’s day.

My twin girls are 4.5 months and were preemies (born at 34 weeks) and I am COMPLETELY paranoid about their development! Not only am I worried about them being delayed due to their preemie status, but also because they are so totally different! I swear, since day 1, my feisty Peyton has been moving and grooving and staying awake afraid she’s going to miss something awesome while my Macy girl is content sleeping the day away and just cuddling with mommy or laying on the floor watching everything.

Peyton has “talked”, smiled and laughed several weeks before Macy and is even rolling over now! Macy laughed for the first time this last weekend and hasn’t done it since! No signs of any desire to roll over, she’d rather just lay her head down and growl during tummy time. Both love to be read to and love to play in the bath, but they are so different!

We have a program here in OK called SoonerStart that comes out to our home and assesses babies’ development and if they are found to be lacking in any area, they send specialists to your home weekly to work with your baby to catch them up! They have speech pathologists, occupational and physical therapist, etc. We have our first assessment next week and I am a nervous wreck! Wish us luck!

I’m not sure if someone has said this yet but; when babies are developing, they work really hard on one thing at a time. Babies are very Taoist in that way, haha! But, you may also notice that when the one that is talking decides to get physical, she’ll stop talking as much. And the same with the one that’s physical. She’ll stop rolling and cruising, and start talking more and more. It’s not that they’ve lost the skill, it’s just that they’ll develop the skills one at a time before moving on to what they think is best. I promise I’m not talking out of my butt, I learned this in my Lifespan Development class a year ago. It was interesting to learn this information too because my step-sister’s son was all words and gabbing away, and one day he stopped talking, and started crawling. My step-sister got scared, and that’s what it was. He stopped talking because he got what he could out of it, and moved on. They’re developing just fine, I think one is just doing the talking for the other. And the other is doing the walking. They’re splitting the load for you, Mama. 🙂

My twins are now 26…they did NOTHING at the same time, LOL. My daughter did everything early…son did everything late, but really they did everything in their own time-which is how it should be. It IS hard not to compare, but remember they are just siblings born at the same time when dealing with fraternal babies-enjoy them, and Mother’s Day!

My son didn’t crawl until he was 11 months, and didn’t walk until he was 20 months old…and he didn’t REALLY walk until just before he turned 2, but when he walked, it was PERFECTION. He had honed every single skill he could until he knew that he could do it without “failing”.
As for speaking, he only said a handful of words up until he started school, and his speech has taken off in the last few months! (He’s now 2 & 1/2) I know all about being paranoid despite the pediatrician’s reassurance. 🙂

I have twins girls who are now 11, and you’re right, it’s so hard not to compare them. My twins did not walk until they were 18 and 20 months old! Talk about a paranoid mama! Despite assurances from their doctor that all was well, I still couldn’t help but worry until they were finally walking. I would also worry that somehow it was my fault (mothers probably do this most of their kids’ lives I guess). Your girls are just beautiful and I love your weekly Friday pic and update about them! Developmentally speaking, infants and young children tend to hyperfocus on one skill at a time, practicing and perfecting it. Then they move on to another skill. So, children who become interested in language will stick with that for awhile, and others who are working on their gross motor skills will ignore speech, so to speak. They’re both doing just fine!! (and for the record, none of my “singles” got any teeth until after 10 months – and they were all eating table food by 6 months.)

I can’t believe how big the girls are getting! And so cute too! I’ve found with my six kiddos that the ones that were slow talkers were the ones that were a lot more active and vice versa. It has absolutely no bearing on who’s now the intellectual child either, which is weird. My son that started crawling out of his crib at ten months, but didn’t talk hardly at all until after he turned one is in TAG, as well as being athletically gifted. My other son who literally didn’t roll over until he was 7 months is now Mr. Sports Star. 🙂 Just rejoice in the fact that each is gifted in their own special unique ways and will progress at their own pace. Fearfully and wonderfully made! 🙂 They are such sweeties and I always enjoy seeing their weekly update pics!

I have 4 month old twin girls and I’ve noticed the exact same thing! My smaller one, Zoey, babbles all the time and it took her longer to figure out how to roll over and my larger baby, Quinn, is up on her knees and almost army crawling but doesn’t babble much at all.
